Sorry for such a generic posting, but I'm just starting the search for next boat (well, not really - been searching all my life!). Would welcome specific input - known issues, bad years per model, etc.
Need the following and have been looking on the Yacht World site for some preferred layouts.
* 34' or better, need 12'+ beam
* Want to own boat for about 10 years
* Sleep 2 adults (couple, plus my two kids 8 & 10, plus maybe kid friends.
* Spend most of the time at dock on Irondequoit Bay (off Lake Ontario), frequently overnight
* 1x or 2x weekends away per season
* Must look cool - no water campers allowed
* Cockpit space is as important as cabin to us
Here are some of the models I'm potentially interested in... all are roughly years 1985-1992
* Searay 4xx Sundancer, 370/390/400 Express
* Chris 4xx Amerosport
* Trojan 11/12/13 meter express
* Wellcraft 43 Portofino
* Regal 400/402 Commodore
* Silverton 40x
* Carver 538 Montego
I know or have heard of some specific problems with hulls, stingers, weak decks, etc. and hope someone can help quantify them (yes, I know older boats require survey).
Also, I'd hate to be underpowered and don't have experience with diesels, so I'm looking for information on propulsion too.
Love this forum and hope to hear from some of you guys and gals. At minimum, this is always a fun exercise...
