Big fish kill in riverhead

Was just talking to someone from riverhead said there was a huge fish die off up the river by the atlantis...... said lack of oxygen in the water....

The water in the bay is definitely a strange color right now... Hope it clears up and we don't have any brown tide impacts on clamming this summer.
 
Fish kill was just on news. They were bunker, thousands of them chased in by a school of bluefish. They say there was not enough oxygen in the water for all of them so they started to die.
 
I brought my boat over to the Cedar marina basin on Sunday morning to clean the bottom. The visibility was zero. I couldn't see the propellers, only a shadow when I was right next to them. Cleaning the bottom was complete guess work.I did pick up 4 mph so it was worth it. The sticker shock at the pump is 11,000 volts. Billy K.
 
We go to Treasure Cove in Riverhead almost every year, and enjoy the marina. But we have always been suspect about the water there.

In 1999, we were there with our Golden Retriever. She had an itchy "hot spot" on her body prior to the trip, so there was a small shaved area on her body. She fell in the water at Treasure Cove, and died a week later. Was probably unrelated, but we always felt there was radioactivity or something weird with the water in that channel.

They said it was lack of oxygen from so many fish.
There is no radioactivity in the water.
 
Bobbie... we've been there every august for the last 4 years......Great place....good time...

we are a pack of searays on that last dock by the gas dock....

Im not sold on the oxygen story....

Maybe one of you guys has his shore power cable in the water....that will do it too!
Or maybe all those Sea Rays together is stinking up the water!
I hear SeaRays use alot of oxygen or their hulls begin to blister!
 
Remind me to put Riverhead on my " places I must visit " list !!!!!

Riverhead is peconic water and peconic water is really the cleanest and nicest body of water. I think the issue probably is the marina is at the mouth of the peconic riverwhich is fresh water. So the marina is technically in brackish water. I wonder if zincs corrode faster in this area?

Dave, in various areas there can be Radioactivity in water, and this is besides my boat “Radio Waves” playing great tunes.

Radioactivity or Radon in the ground or water is very common. In fact many people who build in rural areas have had to test for Radon in their basements; my brother did up in the Berkshires MA, on top of a very rural road and found trace elements.

Most of the time it is harmless, but their can often be elevated levels. From a google search.. There are basically three types. 1- Primordial - from before the creation of the Earth 2- Cosmogenic - formed as a result of cosmic ray interactions 3- Human produced - enhanced or formed due to human actions.

I am most concerned by the human factor and not so much with natural Radon or Radionuclides , but the combination of toxic runoff that can enter the water. This combined with Radionuclides can cause major problems for our environment.

Take Riverhead, a mix of farms, housing, and some industry. Add possible mismanagement of waste disposable, and years of farm fertilizers entering our underground water systems. At this point anything is possible.

Just another note, LI has one of the highest cases of breast cancer. I am not buying the oxygen thing killing the fish, although it may have been a contributing factor.
 
This is the LONGEST I've ever seen the " brownish " water around this area......its been weeks now...............WTF ????

Maybe Matherson was on to something ????

Yes and I was surprised. But it must be the north shore or middle island. The ocean breeze cleanses. Or maybe that is for hangovers.

Maybe you went swimming with all those hits of LSD in your pocket! That could kill the fish or at least trip them up!

IT did rain alot prior to the kill off...

Dave, I am not sure what you mean by LSD…

Oh maybe you mean, Blotter, Orange Barrel Sunshine, Windowpane, or possibly Purple Haze?

The guy who invented LSD just died, Albert Hoffman at age 102! And they said Acid was no good for you!
