How many reasons do people need to avoid Mexico?
 
This is a lawless country run by drug cartels. I would never consider going there by boat. You put your life in your hands if not by the government, certainly by the cartels.

I'm on RV forums where they talk about RV caravans into MX, some about living there or taking extended trips there. I just don't feel lucky...
 
My family and many of our friends and aquaintances have often vacationed in Mexico (primarily in the caribbean/Yucatan region) and have always found the locals to be very friendly and have even considered purchasing beachfront property in the area.
But always somewhat leery of the Mexican government and property ownership by foreigners, we have thus far not seriously considered the actual purchase of any such properties and actions by the Mexican government like this boating incident only add to our concern over such purchases.
If I were an expat living in Mexico, these recent actions by the Mexican government would make me a little apprehensive.
 
"The document in question, known as a Temporary Import Permit, can be obtained from a Mexican government website and proves holders own their boats and promise not to leave them in Mexico or sell them here."

"The office says it has four months to decide whether to release the boards or sell them at auction."

HUH!! . . . Kind of defeats the whole purpose of leaving or selling your boat in Mexico.

If the American government took the same approach, requiring a $70 permit for every Mexican citizen in America, it may go a long way towards balancing our budget.
 
I wouldn't go to Mexico if you paid me. There are plenty of other places where the government is stable, the people are friendly, they speak English and there are no drug cartels.

Is there more to the story? Are some of these people cruising Mexican waters without the proper paperwork or staying beyond their cruising permits? You d be surprised how many boats don't just that in the Bahamas. Just imagine what would US custom do if they caught foreign flagged boats without proper permits

You will have to reach your own conclusions but there is no reference to missing paperwork in the letters from Latitude 38. No doubt some boats violated something but the one example was idiotic. The inspectors could not find the HID which is plainly located where it always is. The boat was on the list so it was impounded despite the protests of the crew.

Much of the cruising industry on the Mexican west coast has developed due to US and Canadians lured there by Latitude 38 over decades. Entire marinas and all their employees and support staff are supported by those cruisers.

I don't know. What do we do to people here illegally. Or over the road trucks for that matter (yes it is prevalent in CA, NM and AZ).

I am with the rest of you though. I used to like traveling to the "Mayan Riviera" area south of Playa del Carmen. However I have not been there now since 2007 because of the issues in that city and most of Mexico. It does not seem like a great place to go. Although I must admit, this years trip to Jamaica did not give me warm fuzzies off the resort either.
 
Could be some local bureaucrat decided he wanted a new yacht...
 
It sounds like one big ugly mess they are creating and it will hurt tourism. I have enjoyed visiting the Yucatan and the people are very helpful and friendly. They understand that the only thing holding up the areas economy is tourism.

US Customs can seize the foreign flagged boat and jail the captain according the US rules. Failure to report can result in civil penalties as defined in Title 19, United States Code, Section 1436 to include a penalty of $5,000 for the first violation and $10,000 for each subsequent violation with the conveyance subject to seizure and forfeiture. In addition to being liable for a civil penalty, any master who intentionally commits a violation under Subsection (a) of this section, if convicted, is liable for a fine of not more than $2,000 or imprisonment for 1 year, or both.
If you obey the rules, you should be OK visiting any country's port.
 
Mexico isn't the only country imposing crazy penalties...

How about charging a 13% tax on boats spending winter in a country. Which country you ask?

I ll stick to the Bahamas and some of the Carib... The days of drug cartels and corruption are for the most part long gone in the Bahamas and south Florida. The 80s have been over for 20years

John, rules may not be enforced on illegal Mexicans aka future democrats but they are on boats. For instance, us customs has been known to fine vessels $5000 per offense for not notifying us customs when moving from one port to another.

Yea when told to leave by the very politicians they were paying for, in the Bahamas and South Florida, all the bad guys just packed up, sold their banks, finance companies, import companies, real estate holdings, car dealerships, ETC and moved on. If any of them left it was to make room for the Russians and Eastern Europeans. Bahamian Pols are still as crooked as Eleuthera, they just learned to be a little more discrete in taking the payola. I really prefered the late 70's when there was true equal opportunity and all you needed was more cash than the other guy.

Let me take this another way...

Recently, a buddy was vacationing in Cancun. Got attacked by a croc while playing golf. Lost some digits and required immediate surgery...the local hospital was private and wouldn't treat my friend until he paid in full, up front, before they would touch him.

stopped me from thinking about heading south for sure.
 
Yet Me****ans get free healthcare here as illegals.
