Today is a bit more complicated. How strong are bilge pumps in terms of pushing power ?
I have two bilge pumps. # 1 bilge pump is a "West Marine", 1000 GPH and is wired directly to a dash switch and is strictly an either "ON" or "OFF" pump. This one was already in the boat when I got it, and although the bilge area was quite clean, I did vac it and wash the bilge area out and then took this West Marine pump out and scrubbed the strainer screen surround out and made everything very clean and open. This pump exhausts the bilge through a 3 foot long 3/4 in. garden hose to an existing 3/4 in. thru-hull fitting.
Ive been researching the subject on this forum and am advised to add a second bilge pump, and this one should be set up with a float switch (or use a model with an internal switch)so that this bilge pump will run from a constant power source and thus is on "auto-pilot". So with the two bilge pumps in place, happy secure boating pleasure will abound, right ?...
# 2 bilge pump is a brand new "Sea Choice" 1000 GPH and is wired to an external "Atwood" float switch that is also brand new. This pump exhausts through another existing transition fitting that reduces a 1-1/4 thru-hull fitting down to the 3/4 in pump outlet and this hose is 4 foot long. All electrical connections everywhere are soldered and secure and everything functions, but the problem is that neither pump gets the bilge water up and out. Total uphill climb is less than 2 feet overall.
I am hoping to debut this thing on the water this coming weekend, but not without completely and PROPERLY working bilge pumps...There are no obstructions anywhere and they are receiving proper and abundant electrical supply from 2 different circuits, but neither seems to have enough oomph and there arent even any kinks in the lines naywhere and all hose fittings are tight....
Any thoughts as to why these things arent pushing the water out ?
