Bilge pump questions

I was trying my bilge pumps and find that they do not work without the battery switch on and the 12v switch and individual bilge switches on. Is this normal?? I thought at least one bilge pump would be wired to operate without the battery switches being on? I think I will put in another pump and have it wired directly to one battery. Any thoughts? Oh 94 Carver 320
 
Mine are wired battery direct, the wires go to the board and a guarded breakers then the pumps.
 
Carvers are wired so that the automatic switch will operate the pump regaurdless of battery switch position...all of them. The manual side of any of the bilge pumps will not work with the batteries off.
 
All bilge pumps should be wired direct to the batteries, no question.
 
I thought that the auto bilge would work regardless of where the battery switch/panel switches were. Maybe the front pump has died. I will have to pull it and check it out.

Well, the rear pump does work without the battery switch on. The front pump is not! It is an attwood pump with separate switch. I cannot tell the capacity. It is a larger pump. I have a rule 1100 auto, but I am not sure it has the capacity I need. I think a 2000 with a separate float switch would be better? What capacity is normally installed in the front?
 
I'm surprised it has an Attwood pump...must be a replacement. Carver would ahve put a Rule 1500 from the factory.
 
The front pump had been replaced when I tracked the wiring. The pump was dead/stuck. I put in a Rule and I am going to replace the rear one also. Thanks for the help.
 
Ram: do you have any idea why Cerver bilge pumps are mounted on a shelf above the bilge bottom???
 
Bruce...basically to facilitate replacement and to keep screws out of the actual hull. I agree that sometimes they mount them too high, but I'd rather have that than holes into my hull.
