Bilge water suction hose?

Yeah, I never saw that wand before. I also like the other thing they have which looks like a sponge under a piece of granite to hold it down. I have been comtemplating this for a while, even on other Regal I had. On this model Regal, they put the bilge pump in the very rear which is fine when going up on plane, but when sitting at dock, it does not work until water level in bilge reaches almost 3 inches deep!!!!! Water collects forward of the engine room. So I had abought a diaphragm pump 3 years ago and never did it. I shop vac it constantly. But I think I am ready to tackle this project. Like I said before my issue was where to discharge the water since all my thru hulls are used and I have to tie into an existing one or dill a hole!

The nice thing about a diaphragm pump is they will suck up all the water with no backflow. I don't care about a auto switch, just want something so I don't have to break out the shopvac!

My boat has 2 large engine hatches that collect alot of water. I think when it rains hard water comes in faster than it can go into scuppers and drains and it starts to backup and overflow. Not much you can do about it.






I d be more concern about the source of the water and first make sure it s indeed rain water. There can be so many other sources from rudders, underwater lights, etc...

If it is really rain water, maybe the drains can be improved. It s hard to accept that on a boat that size they can't come up with proper drains.... There has to be a way to add a drain to the area or maybe enlarge the existing drain. I woudl also start by making sure there isn't debris in the drains.

Water flowing in from engine hatch isn't good for corrosion
 
They make a flat square "foot" that you can attach to a hose that can draw water from the bottom of a bilge via a diaphragm pump.

I don't think it would. My drycleaner has a huge tank in his store. IIRC, they work by creating some sort of suction by circulating the water in the tank.

That got me to thinking though..... What about a fish tank bubble making stone? Seal it with 5200 except for a small area at the bottom and hook that to the diaphram pump.
 
I have had good luck with a kitchen sponge glued to the bottom of a scrap piece of marble (salvaged from an old trophy). I also made one with a scrap piece of Corian counter-top material. Pretty much anything that is flat and is heavier than water will work. I attached a small plastic hose barb to a hole drilled in the center of the marble. Once the kitchen sponge gets too filled with debris I just tear it off and glue on another sponge.

So I have the pick-up worked out, but I can't seem to fine a suitable pump. Something that is self-priming, can tolerate running dry and isn't too noisy would be great.

I ordered 3 cheap 12v self priming mini pumps on ebay I plan to test them out sometime over the next couple of months it's a cheap experiment even if I crap the whole idea it worth a try. For testing purposes I will just tap on of the bilge pump power and run them in manuel mode to see how they work. Two of the I will feed into the adjacent sump boxes the thirdi will have to figure something out.

I picked up a flojet, high power diaphragm pump on ebay.
This is similiar to a fresh water pump.
I was going to put a filter screen in line, screw on/off.
This will capture the debris that does make it thru.
I am even wondering if I need the first stage filter on the wand.
Just use a copper tube with holes and let the screw on filter capture the crap.
Really there should not be alot of debris in the bilge but there always seems to be.

I know alot of you are saying just stop the water, but it's not that easy and it's a common issue on some boats for rain water to go places you can't control. I think when boats are designed these builders look at the issue but don't take into account change in weight. So when say my fuel tanks are empty boat leans more rear. Full more mid. This totally changes runoff that goes into engine hatches. Guess I can add more scuppers forward of hatches.
 
That sounds like a high volume pump! I going with a much lower volume pump being there is very little water to deal with I thinking of the wand of more of a straw sucking/sipping out whatever is there so a slower lower volume pump should do the trick without collapsing the pickup hoses.
Now you have me curious when do you plan to do this install?
 
As said earlier, it has been in the design stage for like 3 years and it's just a matter of getting around to it.
I am gonna look to do a temp install in June as I am out of the country on business for a few a weeks.

The concept for me with the high volume was it would double as a crash pump if needed. Plus I also have some pretty long rungs as my thru hulls all are under my swim platform and water collects forward of engine room, so I am looking at abotu 10 foot run.

I will keep you posted. I also want to look at eliminating the water as well, but know that I won't be able to totally eliminate source of water in bilge.
 
I did this on my boat for the same reason. I tied into my shower pump with some add'l hose and tees along with shut off valves. When I want to vacuum out the remaining water, I just turn on my shower pump and open/close the shut off valves to direct the suction.

I use this for my engine room bilge and mid bilge in the cabin. The pump is about 15' from the engine room but there's enough suction to work. It takes about a minute to get it all.

Probably $25 worth of valves and tees at Home Depot. Works great.

John watch the video and see what is left in the bilge this is what I want to get rid of!
