I have a 1987 340 EC. The shower sump is in the front part of the bilge and there is always some soapy water. Also, the shafts drip some a water accumulates around the rear bilge pump and there is always a little water there. I tried using clorox tabs to help kill any bacteria but that also attacks the wire on the float switches. Is there any available product to put in these two area to help combate stagnate water and bacteria?

I was just talking about that issue with my mechanic. Obviously, the key is to get that water out of the bilge before it starts growing stuff. My shower sump which is located forward, actually drains overboard back near the stern. I "T'ed" into an existing connection. You might consider trying something similar, so your shower sump water doesn't collect in the bilge.

I'm not sure if standard bilge cleaning solutions will take care of any odors. I'm also not sure if ammonia would have a similar effect as clorox tabs, but it might be worth a try.

Jack, thanks..I nned to do something to keep the old water from sitting around. I was even thinking of creating an enclosed box for the shower sump but where it drains it difficult to get to for cleaning. There has to be a chemical that will help 'purify' the water to eliminate the bacteria without attacking the wires and float switch..

whats worked for me ( so far ) is I add about a 1/2 cup of C.P. ( Raritan potti cleaner ) to my sink & shower drains when the boat sits between trips. It seems to control the soap scum issue.....and so far it hasn't attacked the float switch in the shower sump........... plus it smells nice.

I haven't used it in the bilge......but bilge cleaner would have the same effect.
