Bimini Big Game Club to Reopen

Great rant Dave! Those crossings hold some of my best memories.
How about during our after dinner cookout cleanup we all sprang to action when that supply boat lost control and began smashing into boats at the end of the docks. Some of us had to herd kids from the fuel dock, others began untying boats that were in the path of the rogue supply boat. Lots of damage but fortunately no injuries.
Ed putting a piece of squid on an $8.00 fishing rod and landing a white Marlin.
We shared resourses, fishing and snorkeling on each others boats, and sharing the catch.
Those were great times and as you said, we were on small boats. Paul and I were on 26 footers. Who was the young guy who brought his girlfriend over on his 20' Pro Line?
Anybody have old pictures? Les posted an album of our first trip on this site.

Pete,

Not to mention you changing props by straddling the engine 25 miles off of Florida in 4 foot seas or you in the water with the White Marlin off of Bimini untangling the line from your engine!

Dave

I also loved the "old" Bimini athough not that old compared to the memories of some (8 to 10 years ago). In fact it was after a couple of week end trips on chalks and staying at big game that I decided to mave up from a 25 footer to a 37 in 98

but sadly most of what made Bimini what it was is gone. Sure the sapona is still there and still a terrific snoreling spot, honeymoon has lost a lot of its beauty now that it s split in half but it s still a great spot. But everything else has changed for the worst or disapeared

I don't think anyone goes to Bimini expecting "grande cuisine", I ll take a good burger, fresh sea food or conch burger and a kalik in a casual waterfront setting with other boaters, tourist and Bahamians.

Unfortunately Bimini dowsnt have that anymore. That s why I say that Bimini bay has sucked life out of alice town since many boats go up there and it s too far Up the road to be worth leaving the golden gates...

Hopefully the opening of big game will change that and bring life back to what could be paradise just 40 miles from SoFl. It s a lot closer and much nicer than key largo!

Nicely written Dave.

Hopefully Bimini will turn around and come back to something like it once was.

Thanks Captain Bill and Pete..but if anyone wants to read something really nicely written that captures Bimini "back in the day" and gives a little history on its peaks and valleys, I recommend "The Last Marlin" by Fred Waitzkin.

From Bluefins running through Tuna Alley up to the the first appearance of Square Grouper, Fred captures it all.

Bob I asked around and the only place you MIGHT get a refill is Bimini Bay. It used to be at the Big Game Club, we'll see if it comes back there.

Dave, That was[:-cry][:-cry] beautiful, brings back memories.
Wonder if that big Sting Ray that followed you around Honeymoon Harbor is still looking for you.

Thanks Dan. Things seem to be so iffy in Bimini right now and I don't want to take a chance so I ordered a portable compressor today so I can refill my own tanks. Now I will only carry 2 tanks instead of 6 so the over all weight will be about the same.

I appreciate you asking for me.

Bob

Joe,

Great pictures. Maybe I need to re-think this whole Motorhome thing!

Dave, I have a camper and a boat and believe me I would dump the camper in a heartbeat. Took the boat for a run yesterday and I was smiling so much I think my teeth got suburned...

THanks for the trip down memory lane. Most of those that went on the initial trip dont come around here much anymore but they all became good friends.
I remember it being ironic that all the hardcore fishing guys got slips all over the island and all of us with kids were at the Bluewater even thos it wasnt planned.

I plan to go back to Bimini and stay at the Bluewater. I dont like the big pretentious marinas.

Paul that would be a wise idea. The Bimini Bay is expensive and without character. it has a great pool and Sabor looks good but I'm thinking it will break the bank and not justify the expense. It's also all the way up and away from the inlet with no decent dinking near by.
Bimini Blue is at times a bit busy with locals gassing up but the chatter is fun to listen to. They had the women's fishing contest where all the locals in their skiffs fished. Trophy's were passed out along with some rum punch and they all had a good time.

in addition to the lack of character, the staff at bimini bay is hardly friendly. it's a PITA to get a ride from the marina to the front desk where you need to check in and check out, they insist of tagging all the guests like farm animals with colored wrist bands... then when you come in, it takes 15 minutes for them to decide what slip to assign, even though the place is rarely more than 20% full! and then you have all the construction going on....

on the plus side, you can take the dink up the bay all the way end of the bay and cross onto the north beach which goes on for miles.

Update on Big Game -

Slip reservations are being accepted for 5/25 and later. Rooms won't be available until mid June. Slip reservations for Memorial Day weekend are almost gone.
