To avoid any potential problems, I started the season with:

  • New Long Block
  • New elbows
  • New exhaust manifolds
  • New intake manifold
  • New San Juan fresh water cooling system
  • Newly rebuilt outdrive (with new impellor)

Ran through 5 hours of uneventful break-in period.

Today went down the cove to get gas, back out of the cove, (about 1/2 hour of running) then throttled up to about 2500. Gauges all looked fine. Two minutes after I last looked at them, I see steam coming from the bilge. Look back at the temp gauge to see that I'm overheating (pretty obvious based on the smell anyway).

As I pull back on the throttle and prepare to shut down, I hear "pop-pop" from the engine compartment. Inspection reveals that the hose at the bottom of the starboard exhaust manifold is cracked down the entire length, and the small clear hose on the fresh water cooling system has about a 1/4" hole blown out of it.

Mechanic who install all this (merc certified and very reputable) is out of town till Tuesday.

What the heck happened?
