I love to read other folks commentary on their trips so I thought I'd toss mine in..
Had a nice trip to Block this weekend. Left Friday at 8:45am from Bullocks Cove and was in the pond at 10:30. The ride down the bay was smooth as silk. The swell hit past the Jamestown bridge at Beavertail. But it wasn't too bad. A little pounding around Pt. Judith but much smoother by the 1BI mark.
Managed to grab a mooring but got very lucky. My wife spotted one in front just off Champlins so we grabbed it and considered ourselves lucky as it was the only one around with plenty of folks looking. Then the harbor master comes over to us to point out that the ball has an orange "reserved" bouy on it. Crap! But he says he'll try to find a private mooring for us so sit tight. Oh well, meanwhile my six year old daughter says, "dad, I see a mooring right there..." I point out there's a boat on it. But she tells me "They're about to leave cause their engine is running." Sure enough, I shout over and they're leaving so we moved right on over. Sometimes it pays to listent to the six year old.
Great day at the Beach on Friday, hot and humid and the water was perfect. The wind started to pick up on Saturday and my older daughter came down with something so we laid low most of the day. The wind really got going on Saturday night gusting to 25kts and the fog rolled in. Sunday was not much of a beach day with fog almost all day. So we hit the town and had dinner at the National. We were a little stressed on the weather as forcasts called for sustained wind, high seas from Cristobal which was on its way, and fog...
Sunday evening the skys cleared and the wind died, but we awoke Monday to pea soup fog and a notice of a small craft advisory for dangerous seas beginning at 2pm. I checked weather radar on my phone and saw rain coming. No sooner did I turn it off than it started to pour. Half hour down pour with some rumbles of thunder. Once it subsided we decided we better take our chances and get going.
Ride back was an adventure. I felt a little like Sig Hansen on Dangerous Catch. Wind was down but 5-6ft following rollers and lots of fog. Had to play the trottles riding up and down some of these things while watching the radar for people out fishing. How you could stand in the middle of a 20ft center console and fish in the middle of this stuff is beyond me but there were some folks doing it. After about 50 minuts of adrenalin, we were back in the safety of Narragansett bay, the fog lifted, the sun shown, and it was a smooth ride back...
Had a great time. Leaving on our 8 Day trip to Cuttyhunk and the Vineyard next Week. Fingers crossed for good weather...
