You have all convinced me that I need more ocean going experience, which I will try to get, and that I should not try this with the family. Thanks for your concern, and see, your posts worked! Feel good that you saved an innocent wife and two children (grin).
Bob, I too have two young kids. While I haven't been to Block Island, I did see it from the water...no time to stop. I was taking delivery of my new(to me) boat this past September. I'm pretty cautious, I have been boating for 20+ years, taken the appropriate courses, etc. I was a bit nervous abou the trip around Point Judith (across from block in RI) and entering the LI sound, traversing all of LI sound, etc. Considering I had never been there before and I was not familiar with the boat (even though I had a loooong survey) I told my wife and kids they were not allowed to come. They were disappointed but understood. Instead, I brought a couple of friends who could actually help out in an emergency (seasoned boaters, mechanic as well). I also brought two portable GPSs, charts, portable VHF, etc. In the end, it was easier to just use the compass and Binoculars (something that's hard to do by yourself).
Also, when the weather turns bad, the first thing you do is tell your guests to get in the cabin. This has happened twice to me. Once with the wife and kids less than one mile from port. Another with friends at night...I made one stay outside and stand watch with me which really helped.
Personally, I don't think you're crazy too for trying this alone or with your friends. I'd be very concerned about lack of self-draining cockpit...do you have one? I'm very glad to see you're leaving the wife and kids behind. Wear PFDs, get some radios, top off the fuel, expect the worst, have some fun. Odds are, you'll be OK...maybe just beat up (but hey, with the beat-downs you get on BoaterEd, a trip to block will be nothing).
Boating is supposed to be adventerous...just do your best to limit the downside.
BTW - My brother and his friends make an annual trip around Manhattan in jetskis. Most would say he's nuts but they've done it three times. So far, I've begged off but might just have to succumb to peer pressure this summer. Again, no wives and kids.
