Block lipper holes to engine compartment ?

I have a 28' boat that has lipper holes that allow bilge water to run between all three compartments of the boat.(Engine,Mid,Salon)Recently had engine cleaned of corrosion and suspect that possibly some of the water getting on the engine was slashing up as it flows through the lipper hole at the front of the engine compartment. Have a bilge pump in each of the compartments. Other thought was to fab a cover of some kind to allow water to flow but to reduce its speed.
