Anchoring and or mooring advice at Block,
middle of week July 9-13.

Moorings are usually gone before 10:00 AM (first come first serve) but are the best and safest deal on Block !! Anchoring can be fine but I have seen many-a storms come ripping though and wreck havoc on the anchored fleet. My suggestion - position yourself the day before so you can get an early start and get into the "Pond" before 9:00am Moorings are lime green and on the starboard side of the channel. Payne's Dock is a good fall back plan. If you bring a Dink you can access some of the nicer/private beaches on the Island - Scotch Beach for one - north-east corner of the Pond. Drinks & Dinner at the "Oar" is a must - Our Oar is hanging from the ceiling (along with about 200 others)

Good Luck & Enjoy

Will be at Champlins at Block Is, July 13-16, then heading to Essex in the morning of the 16th. The last couple of times that we were at Block, the moorings were mostly full. I guess the middle of the week should be ok, but be the early bird.

The Oar is a great spot for good food and drink.

We have a group leaving on the 13th and will be there most of the week.

Brad, where are you staying at Essex? We'll be there the 14th-18th.

I've never had any luck getting a mooring at Block. Last year a friend told me if you speak to the harbor master you can rent private moorings, but you need to be ready to move around if the owners come back or have given permission to friends to use them. We always anchor, I generally stay close to the harbor entrance to the left when coming in. It's a longer dinghy or launch ride from there to get in to anywhere, but usually a little more room to maneuver. I've never had problems holding, but have had some close calls with other boats that dragged anchor drifting by when the wind picked up.

Following Block Island, we are staying at Essex Island 7/16-19 then Fishers Island 7/19-21. Looking very forward to this trip.

We'll be on a mooring at the Chandlery Saturday-Monday and then probably spend one night at Hamburg cove. We'll try to stop by with the dinghy at Essex Island to say hi at some point. From there we're headed to Montauk to fish for the rest of the week.
