Currently running mechanical diesels with an "open" blow-by design.
Yanmar 6 LP series
Crankcase blow by from the valve train area is simply piped to the air cleaner area
As engine RPM increases, these vapors are sucked onto the air filter media and then into the engine where they coat the intercooler and turbo blades.
The aftermarket has come up with a number of "CATCH CANS" that coaless these vapors back into a liquid that can be drained out from time to time. I have one on my 420 HP Ford Mustang and am quite happy to drain out this nasty crap every couple of months. The Mustang is a closed system, meaning it has a PCV valve. The Yanmar is a simple open system.
In adding the catch can I fear I will restrict the flow of blow-by air/fumes with this restriction, allowing pressure to build up in the valve cover.
Any ideas on how to avoid this, or simply leave well enough alone?
The blowby vapors do in fact make the air filters nasty, also likely doing no good to the intercooler and turbo blades.
Moroso offers such a unit and Raycor has one for marine usses part # ccv4500
