I was cruising home on Saturday night at around 3700 rpm's on plane and suddenly i fell off plane because my my port engine shut off. No alarms at all sounded prior and i was momitoring all the guages and everything seemed perfect. I tried restarting the port motor and it wouldn't even try to crank so i knew something was very wrong. It turns out i have two holes in the side of the block where something let loose on the inside. So depressing. I bought the boat used and had a complete survey with oil analysis done and the boat passed with flying colors. I have only put about 10 hours on the boat myself since taking delivery in mid june since the weather here in NY has been lousy. Anyone ever heard of something like this happening?

Please tell me your under warranty!
Make sure they used the right oil.
Volvo 8.1 must use synthetic volvo oil and anything else will void warranty.

A 2006 boat would be out of VP's standard warranty (2 years). If he has the 2 plus 4 extended, handled by some third party douche bag outfit, good luck with them. I hope they'll cover it. There's really so little to do on these engines, just change oil and filters and plugs every couple years. Sorry to hear this.

Would regular oil over synthetic cause this?
I am nervous now becuase my lousy dealer changed my oil and I wonder since he knew so little abotu my boat that the engine had to use synthetic oil. Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread.

I would still contact volvo warranty or no warranty and see what they say. Volvo is a good company that stands behind their product unlike others.

The boat wasn't purchased until sept 2007 so it is still under the 2 year warranty. The dealership i bought the boat from already called to verify with volvo the boat was covered.

Buy the extended quick!

Sorry to hear about this. Hope you get it swapped ASAP.

Thats good new but now I am curious what oil was in there.

The boat was only serviced by a certified volvo mechanic for the life of the boat so i am sure the oil was the proper synthetic blend.

Even if it wasn't the synthetic blend, regular dino oil will not cause that engine to blow up.

Just to give an update.......My mechanic has gone back and forth with volvo all this week sending pics via email to show the damage and to eliminate having to send a volvo tech to take a look. Today volvo wanted pics of the exhaust because they wanted to make sure Regal did what they were supposed to do to them. He didn't ellaborate at all to my mechanic. Hopefully I will here more tomorrow. 3 weeks missed of boating so far with this ordeal and being in the northeast i'm starting to wonder if i will have my boat at all again this season.dcwjd

Bad Luck on the problem. Good Luck on the warrenty. Another Day of Boating!

Volvo stepped up to the plate!! They called first thing this morning and they are shipping a brand new motor from the factory in Tennessee. The mechanic should have it by tuesday and then i hope to be out on the water next weekend.

Awesome news! I bet that's a relief, huh? Make sure you grab a beer tonight.

Glad to hear that you are getting help.

Would you let me know how hard it is for them to pull the engine? It is a tight fit for where the inboards are placed. The I/O version of the 3560 would be easier to pull a motor.

It was extremely difficult to get those motors out. They needed to be broken down inside the boat little by little a few hours a day because it was so hot inside the engine compartment and there was little room to move around. They needed to take out my generator and also the cablemaster that my came equipped with before they could slide and lift the remaining block.
