Boat hit obstruction in channel entering Davis park.

Boat hit submerged object in Reynolds channel

All with in the last week

All boats sustained damage

Sell your boat.....buy a motorhome......the only thing you'll hit will be a occasional pot hole :)
 
we saw a submerged dock in Hudson canal yesterday that is only visible at low tide. accident waiting to happen.
 
Funny thing is I was just telling someone Friday that all the concerns regarding Sandy debris didn't seem to be coming true and I haven't heard of anyone hitting anything. Then this morning leaving Freeport I hit something just after leaving the marina, didn't see anything before I hit but then a piece of wood floated up. Ran home with no problems so didn't cause any damage. Now Rob's message... Definitely need to continue keeping a close eye out!

There was definitely more junk floating around in the canals in Freeport than I've seen in the Great South Bay.
 
On a related sorta note. Over in merrick we are seeing NEW lumber floating by. Lots of it . All from deck and dock rebuilds. That is very troubling . How a builder can be that irresponsible is beyond me .

I boat out of Freeport and quite honestly, I haven't seen any debris in the water for the last month. Sure there are many damaged docks that have not been repaired but I've not seen any floating wood around. Operation Splash has done a fantastic job of cleaning up the waterways around Freeport (and the whole South Shore for that matter).
 
I will second what Neverending said. Granted I don't go into the Woodcleft or Hudson canals but it has been pretty clean in Freeport Creek straight out to JI.
 
I was just leaving Yachtsmen's Cove and just about up to Jones Inlet Marina. One engine at idle, felt a rumble like I hit bottom but saw 8.5' of water under the boat. I had been through that same spot 3 times in 24 hours at low tide without a problem, and now here I was leaving at high tide and hit something. I have no idea what it was but a 2x4 floated up behind me. I didn't notice anything as I left but I may have missed something. I was going so slow though I would think anything on the surface would have probably been pushed to the side and not ended up in the prop. Anyway, ran out JI and back through FI Inlet and no vibrations so I think all is fine. I'll take a look once the water warms up to check.

The previous day there was a section of a dock floating down Hudson Canal but I think it ended up grounded on the marsh. There were other small pieces of wood. Not a lot, but I really haven't seen anything to the east so it stood out to me a bit. I ran there on the inside on Friday and don't recall seeing anything in the State Channel or up on the marshes.

Maybe I have been lucky, but in the last month I have run to Kismet a few times, the sore thumb a couple of times, connetquot, hemlock cove, garbage cove, bergen point and Nickys in Bayshore a few times and have not seen much to write home about. Of course now that I wrote this I will hit something, but for the most part the Great South Bay is no different from last year. As far as the canals are concerned, I would think they are still holding some suprises for us.

Also on a positive note, it looks like we are finally getting normal high tides.

Summer is finally here - Let's go boating!
 
Wow !

We had a large amount of debris after Charley, but it was all from wind damage.

Storm surge damage yields a different kind of stuff.

I shudder to think of Dave's potential cost/damage with the IPS system.

Risky business.

I shudder too, but I lowered my deductible to 1% so I should be okay if I hit, but if I never leave the dock, I won't hit! LOL. But I am dying to use my boat more.
 
I think Dave should be banned from this thread. He will never leave the dock .

John, saw the dock in hudson canal stuck in the mud now and only viasble at low tide.
 
It's all part of my master plan!
Let others find the debris, then I will go out!
We are actually planning some big trips with some friends.
Dying to get boat into some deep water and let her run.

I do love the sound of my diesels!
 
John, Ill see you around the YC marina. Thats where I am keeping the little boat this year. Hopefully Ill be in the water this weekend...
