Re-thinking my insurance coverage before I renew. Would be curious to hear the collective thoughts of the group as to right amounts (is there a rule of thumb for coverage amounts?) and recommended insurance companies, etc.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
 
Not sure about amounts but I've compared several companies several times with many boats and Travelers always came out the cheapest for the same coverage. Don't know how they are when it comes to a claim as I've been lucky enough to never need them! By the way, I see you're also in Massapequa....we might be neighbors!
 
I also have Travelers.... for the small boat (basic coverage) and they are by far the cheape$t. The big boat is with New Hampshire Insurance Co....also very reasonably priced. I used MRW Insurance Agency in Medford.
 
I will definitely check out Travelers then. Thanks for the responses. I am in Nassau Shores, Barbara - close by?

Rob, I use J. Ryan in Seaford...........everything is always done on the phone, never even met them but they're a pleasure to work with. Don't have time to look for the number now but I'll post if for you tomorrow.
 
I have had Travelers for 9 years and thankfully only needed their services once. They were exceptionally quick to respond and settle, not to mention the lowest price. Service above price !
 
I use Mott in Huntington - boat-ins.com -(631) 549-BOAT, for many years and have been happy with service & rates

Rob.....I think anybody who purchased a boat from SS3.....were turned on to MRW agency.......they represent a variety of different insurance companys....and Geri's good at getting you placed with the right company. She worked hard to get me " wet " winter storage coverage.
 
Travelers, but I get it thru NBOA. National Boat Owners Assocaiation.
Got NBOA originally thru Searay Owners Club, but now I own a Cruisers.
Shopped it around and they have best prices.
NBOA does all the paperwork and shops the price for you for a $25 fee, then they kick in free towing, though I still have Seatow.
 
BoatUS for 10+ years, honestly I have not compared rates over the last 6 and the rates has gone up significantly since after 9/11 but I just have the confidence they will honor the policy when needed without hassels.

Last spring the yard I stored in for the winter did alot of damage when, per their account, the fork lift operator came down on top of my starboard windshield, rail and rub when moving anotehr boat around the yard. BoatUS dispacted a surveror instantly to advise and assess, I was very satisfied with their role.

It is my opinion that BoatUS loves the premiums and hates the claims.

I think that they are living off their reputation which is no longer valid. They are just in business and just another insurance company. Give them a claim and see how ruthless they are.

I need a better alternative.
 
Being a BoatUS member, I've always given them a chance with each boat I've insured. They have always been a lot higher than my local Traveler's agent.
 
Fortunatly I have only had 2 claims over the years and they were back in the early 90's but I do not recall if BoatUS was my co. at the time. I was orginally with Prudential and only switched from them because they stopped insuring marine in NY for a number of years.

So I cannot attest to their current attitutde towards paying a claim, JoeShoes you may be correct.
 
I will call Travelers for a quote. Thanks for all your input. I did buy from Surfside but did not end up with MRW - not sure why not at this point. I have been with Boater's Insurance Agency Inc. and their 2007 quote is better than one I got from USAA for the same coverage - full replacement at agreed upon value, $300,000 liability, $300,0000 uninsured boater, etc. Do those coverage amounts seem low? Is that the kind of coverage most folks have?

And has anyone ever dealt with Boater's Inusrance Agency? Fortunately, knock wood, I have never had to make a claim.

I have been insured threw Mott for years and their prices & service has always been great - but based on what I have been reading about MRW I gave them a call for a quote since my insurance is up in a month - I gave them all the details about me & the boat and the said they should get back to me today
They just called to find out if I trailer my 50 footer -WTF
 
I use Zurich Marine Specialty -- no claims, but my dealer has a very high opinion of htem. Seems to have good rates as well.
