Need to replace the transom lettering for my boat.

Any recommended place to get vinyl decals for my boat's name?
In any direction but preferably as close to NYC as possible.
Is this a while-you-wait process? If not, how long does it take?

thanks

I used someone in Wantagh called Island Boat Lettering. They did it while I waited

Check your yellow pages. Just about any of your local sign makers can do what you need, often while you wait.
I went to a local sign guy for new name and hailing port. Simple black but in a nice font. 15 minutes later and for $20, I'm walking out the door with my new lettering.

Not real close to NYC but a place in copiague called Panorama. They recently did my little boat, name, registration numbers and a boot stripe and they did an AWESOME job. Price was VERY good..

Island Boat Lettering is the only choice for locals.

My nephew and I got ours done by Marie, she does it all from soup to nuts! She will send you previews and come to your boat, next thing you know, it’s done and cheaper than doing it yourself. I origionally used West Marine and I did a pretty good job but it wore poorly after 3 years. She uses a UV protected vinyl. You can email her at:mariesrb2@gr5tlisignsandlighting.com

Thanks guys,

Without question Marie is the best working with people to put what they want on the back of their boat or anywhere for that matter. I don't like to jump in on topics like this because it's like mixing business with pleasure. Anyone from Boater Ed who has used us knows about the " boatered discount". Even if you use someone else but have a question, don't hesitate in calling us. Our website is lisignsandlighting dot com, or Marie directly, maries at lisignsandlighting dot com.

Thanks

Billy, I had no idea you were in the lettering business. Panorama just did a new boot stripe, name, registration numbers and a topside double stripe. Would have definitely given you the business.

Billy......I was thinking of having a full vinyl design made for the sides of my Jeep.....to match the colors of my motorhome...........can you design and install something like that ????

Matt,

No problem, definitely not soliciting here and Panorama has an excellent reputation.

Don,

We have a graphic artist to build whatever you want unless you have a file, and we apply on autos also at our shop. you can email to Marie or call her at 631 293-2538.

Billy.....thats great......I'll get in contact with you when I get back from vacation......and get it done.

Thanks..........

Why not have the LICC guys whose business or work relates to boating in a sticky? I rather support the forum and members then outsiders...

Double D, if you want to design the lettering yourself, i.e. play with the fonts style, background color, blocked or script, etc. Take a look at this site. 3 Day turn around. I have used them for all my lettering need. http://doityourselflettering.com/

KB......I think I want more then just lettering....I was thinking of full side vinyls....to match the colors and scheme of my M/H........ I have NO talent when it comes to this stuff.............I'll leave that to the pro's.

If I remember it correctly, it cost me the same dollars(BoatUS) to do it myself than to have it done, only it made me nervous when I have to center it and make sure not to get bubbles(air pockets) in it as well as the size and colors. Then to have it look cruddy after 3 years.

my buddy bought a vinyl cutter machine and we did our own. We even added shark graphic and bubbles. It was great!

There is a bit of an art to picking the vinyl and application if you have multiple layers, but ours still came out great. Make sure you ask not just about the vinyl colors, but the quality too. They sell the stuff in 5yr, 7yr, etc.. quality levels and you really want something better than the bottom of the line.

Just about any sign shop can do this, but you are better off finding somebody that can really work with you on the design. You really can do just about any font and coming up with a picture of the transom (with measurements) can be a great way to figure out what size of graphic you really need. It's really really hard to just look at a book and decide the right size to print with. You really need to have the context of the size of the boat itself.

If you put it on yourself, work out a plan with the person doing the cutting. The cost of this is all labor. The material cost is very very small. If you screw something up, don't fight it. Just go back and have the printer cut a new piece. Don't be afraid to ask them as it won't cost them much at all once the file has been saved.
