Sounds like the crew was prepared

Three people were rescued when the cabin cruiser they were out boating in hit a submerged object in the Delaware River and sunk in the area of Reedy Point, officials said today.

The incident occurred about 9:45 p.m. Sunday when the crew on the distressed boat set off flares to alert rescuers to their location.

Port Penn, Delaware City and Lower Alloways Creek, N.J. firefighters responded along with a Delaware State Police helicopter.

Delaware City Fire Company spokesman Assistant Chief Matt Netch said marine units found three people on an inflatable life raft just off Reedy Island and took them to Augustine Beach.

The three crew members were on the 52-foot cabin cruiser “Appolo" based out of Summit North Marina.

No one was injured.

The investigation was turned over to the Coast Guard and state marine police.

Capt. Robert Hitchens, of the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control marine police, said salvagers from Sea-Tow were on the scene earlier this morning resuming its salvage operation attempting to raise the vessel.

Once the vessel is pulled out of the water, investigators will examine the damage to determine what caused the boat to sink so quickly.

Hitchens said alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
