Boat US Insurance Increase

Well, Just noticed my insurance lapsed.... I Don't keep up with snail mail anymore... I thought it renewed in Nov but it was October.... Anyway I had to get a new policy since it lapsed. For a 30 Ft Boat inland waters with 300K in liability and agreed upon hull value for total loss.
With the new rates I still came in within 6 dollars of what I paid last year. Cant speak to mechanical issues but Boat US seems tops for other things like fuel spills, freeze damage towing etc and they work a claim like no one else based on what I have heard... I have not had to use them yet for a claim thank God.... I was also able to get right though to them I thought they would be swapped with Sandy but no issues.

My US Boats policy went down about $60.00 from the previous policy. However I still have not heard from them since I got a claim number for the disaster on Wireless One in Tuckerton/ Little Egg.
I think they are probably overloaded and in many cases can't even get to the boats that need to be looked at. Lot's of boats were effected in my area to New York.

Progressive insurance is a GREAT insurance option for older vessels valued at $40k or under. They typically, at least these days, will not insure larger/older boats for more than $40k regardless of value of the boat. But, if you fall in that category they are a great option as they require absolutely no survey and just need your name, credit card, and hull ID. Mind you, it is not the cheapest insurance, but it sure is the most hassle free. From the tornado we had they proved to be great to work with an excellent at payouts without fuss.

BoatUS is still the gold standard for how claims are handled though.

I have American Family. I boat on the great lakes. My 88 Carver had an acv of $35 and my policy was $550. My regal replaced it and has a acv of $135 for about $1100 annually. Both have $10k in personal property also.

I had a soft grounding that did about $6k in damage last year on the Montego. They were flawless in their coverage, support, and follow through. I actually had to have the guy stop calling me because it was winter. I pay a little more on my house and car than I can get elsewhere. The boat is, I believe, on target. Have had 2 claims (around 6k each) on the house and had the same experience. I'll gladly pay a bit more for the supreme service I have received. Unfortunately, the new agent sucks, but ohh well.

Thanks,

Jim

NBOA is not a insurance company, it is a broker.
I use them and have always been happy with cost, but lets see how payout is now that i have a total loss!

I had a big post about the rate increase BOAT/US was passing along in January. After my boat was totaled in Sandy (On the hard) they tried to increase my rate by 300+ percent, for a similar size/value vessel. It got me looking around and I found a much better rate with Sy Goldberg (sygold at AOL.com). He wrote the policy with Catlin thru Total Dollar Insurance. I even spoke to a big wig at BOATUS and he said that rates were going up due to the losses with Super Storm Sandy.

Now with respect to how "Great" BoatUS is with claims, after my one and only experience with them last year I can say they suck. It took forever to get paid for my loss and paperwork/checks just kept getting bounced around from department to department for approvals and or signatures. For all the years I was insured by them all I ever heard was how fast they pay out claims but while I understand they were very busy due to the volume of claims - I believe I got a complete run around. Price the policy around as not all companies require a new survey. Good luck.

I insure my boat through Nationwide, the same company that insures my home and vehicles. I get a multi policy discount and am able to buy an umbrella (excess liability) policy that covers losses greater than any individual policy. They did not require a survey.

Up until the boat was ten years old it was an agreed upon value. After that they changed it to actual value.

The price was much less than BoatUS and there are no restrictions against travelling in hurricane areas like Florida.

FWIW, I had a complete loss in 2010. BoatUS was great! I will never go with another company other than BoatUS. Sorry to hear others didn't have as good as an experience as I had. Guess it's a crap shoot anymore. This WAS before Sandy too.
