boating accident claims life of major league ace

Terrible when the corps of engineers builds a half mile long 10' high jetty and doesn't notify the public...

How the hell can anyone not that jetty!!!!

Boating at night. Poor nav skills. Going to fast for conditions. Everything to lose and he did.

Jetties and fixed aids are ALWAYS the stand-on vessel.

There's a lot going on in that picture. Not being familiar with that area, I don't know how far away those platforms are. I am definitely curious if there is a green buoy that it out of view from the picture and how far away it is from the red buoy.

The platform are distinct range markers, irrelevant
The red buoy seen in the pic is one many marking the channel inside the jetties (with greens on the other side) this particular one is just outside the jeeryy and the are many more beyond, marking the outter channel.

Bottom line, they were going too fast, and cut it too close to the beach getting into the channel

As stupid as it gets

1) Don't boat at night.
2) Don't go out boating with a$$holes.
3) Don't go boating with people you don't know well.
4) If you do go boating make sure the people you are boating with are competent.
5) If the captain drinks take a taxi.

I agree with all but the first. Don't boat at night? I am sure many of us thoroughly enjoy a night cruise.

Don't boat at night? I strongly disagree. We spend a lot of time on th water at night, probably 25% of our boating time is at night and love it. Whether it's sailing on the bay in either of our small boats, or running a charter on the 84 or even cruising in the Exumas, Pershing s boat at night can be As safe a doing it during the day as long as you use common sense. For instance when sailing Sabrosura, our 26' gaffer, on the bAy we stay out of the areas where idiots will be going fast and stay close to shore in the shallows... When running att night in the Bahamas we only go into anchorages or cuts that I am very familiar with, never in a new area. I make sure lights are working... Etc.

very safe and enjoyable time.

It's not so much about the ability to pilot a boat at night. It is about the notion that there are too many others out there that cannot. Pascal staying in close to shore to avoid idiots would have you directly in the sights of that CC. His friends had him staying close to shore and look what happened? Up on the Hudson not long ago a BWI killed everyone on the boat when he rammed an obstruction close to shore.

Have a look at figure 2 and tell me it's safer at night.

In our case close to shore on th bay means in shallow water where even CCs don't venture at high speed... We also pay attention and have a strong line ready to shine on the sail or on an approaching boat.. Is boating at night a little more risky? Probably... Just like crossing a street or even driving

I think everyone agrees that the risk is higher at night. Most of us also realize that when the risk is higher, we need to be more aware, rduce our speed, and limit where we are willing to go.

Probably going to take flak for this but.......I am tired of the word tragedy being used in place of the words, stupidity, carelessness, incompetence, and irresponsibility. This was not a tragedy, this was stupidity pure and simple. Your speed should match the conditions. If you can't alter course based on what you encounter your going to fast. Boating at night can be quite enjoyable unfortunately the variables that can not be controlled by a boat operator can make it nerve racking. The only thing a Capatin can control is his own boat, this applies to speed and operation. If everyone traveled at the speed they were willing to hit another object at then then worst that would happen would be a scuffed rub rail. If hitting jetty causes your boat to overturn and get shredded like Cole slaw then guess what.....your going to fast, driving like a moron, and pay the price for your own stupidity. All I can say is thankfully it was a jetty that was hit and not another boat.

Btw if your looking for a situation where the word tragedy can be acurately used it would be the FDNY Battalion Chief that was killed when a building exploded leaving behind a wife and 3 children. Rest in Peace Mike.

Kevin - no flak from me. Too fast is too fast. As for FDNY Battalion Chief, sad story. I've got a lot of LEO and FD friends. As you said, RIP!
