I have retreived what I think is the assembly number off my Borg Warner Velvet drive transmissions.These are direct drives. It reads 10-18-004. I have done some homework on this model through the BW website and their spec sheets show this unit as : AS12-72CR 1.52:1 ratio in forward and 1.68:1 in reverse.Question. Does the "R" stand for "gear reduction" and if so, the manufacture indicates the use of Mobilfluid 424 tractor gear oil not Dextron III that all the marine boys tell me too use! Is there a definite visable feature of the reduction model I can look for that will identify this unit? I'm thinking its the longer rear case assembly? If it helps, they are installed in a 1985 34ft Searay Sedan Bridge. Would these have commonly come with a reduction unit because of the boats weight and size? I can't imagine even the 454's swinging the props at a 1:1 ratio! So my thoughts are, if these are gear reduction models,can you run Dextron III in them and if not,what if any damage could or has been done by using it. Any help on this appreciated!
