I couldn't find any older posts on this: Does anyone know how to find out which bottom paint would be on my boat...is it painted at the factory or dealer??? 2006 39 Motor Yacht.

I'm planning on touching up with Interlux ACT.

Thanks,

Matt

Late Model Cravers with Factory Coatings have used Sea Hawk "Monterey" #5445 ablative paints...not easy to find and expensive..I have used Interlux ablative for touch up with good compatibility results

The SeaHawk paint is a water based paint, and can be covered with any brand of water based paint, and can also be covered with a number of hard and ablative paints.

Is it true that you can paint an oil base over a water base but not a water base over an oil base?

I applied Interlex Micron CSC last spring on a sand blasted and interprotected bottom. It still looks good, but seems strange not appling something fresh this spring. Does any one know if the buildup will be more so this summer?

isn't Micron CSC ablative?...if it is, you should apply a thin coat each year for full protection.

Micron CSC is multi-season ablative. Don't need to recoat if you still have a good covering of paint.

It still looks like I just put it on month ago. Just seems like it wouldn't be as strong acting. Maybe so? Thanks!

Night Moves. I am in the same situation. I also feel "strange", as I am accustomed to the spring painting ritual each year.

I chose colors (barrier coat vs ablative) that allow me to see thin/bare areas of the ablative (3-4 coats of VC17 applied last year) so I could "touch up" when not necessary to coat the entire hull. This being my first year since the R&R in 2008, I found no areas showing through so I choose to pass this year. I may just run an ablative coat along the sides and transom after waxing the hull (for esthetics).

We are in fresh water so I just sand lightly, do above the waterline each year and touch up the bottom as needed. I use a "muti-season" paint and figure that if I touch it and get black on my hand it must be still working.

I too would do a chine coat, just to touch up what you see. One time I switched products and the undercoat started to peel off - what a mess! I haven't used CSC before, but wanted to use some good stuff.

nightmoves - Was it CSC that made the undercoat peel off? I was thinking about switching to it but now I'm nervous.

No, I never used CSC before. In the past I used "Bottom Coat" or the West Marine stuff. Usually the cheaper stuff because I'm on the Mississippi and I would touch up every year. Mixing brands is not good.
