Bought another boat!

Well, I went and bought another boat! OK, not another powerboat, but a classic 13' Grumman aluminum canoe. I've restored it to its former glory, stripping four (4!) layers of paint in the process.

I've set it up for general paddling and for fishing. I caught two largemouth bass on her maiden outing, so I hereby declare this project a success! They were DELICIOUS, by the way. [:-chef]

THUNDER loves exploring out of the way places as much as I do. This has been a FUN project!

Another reason to love my Chevy!

This boat is actually very stable. Believe it or not, the shorter 13 foot models actually have a little wider beam than their longer 15 and 17 foot counterparts. Best of all, I only paid $130 for it. I spent a couple hundred fixing it up- LOTS of paint stripper, GPS mount, padded seat, etc. I even spent $20 on a non-backed featherweight carpet made from recycled plastic bottles and cut it to fit and sewed on velcro straps. It doesn't trap or hold water and keeps Thunder's nails from making "tink, tink, tink" noises which would scare away every fish for miles.

On our first outing, we were really navigating some tight spots which caused some branches to come over the bow and he actually leapt clear across the center thwart into my lap, nearly the length of the boat! Needless to say, we listed a bit, but stayed upright. For an active dog, he actually settles down in the canoe. It does help that I've paddled since I was little, though. Dad used to even flood the canoes and have us practice recovery drills.

Thunder is a mixed breed. I believe he's a Black Lab / German Shorthaired Pointer mix, but who really knows? He has the face and color of a lab, but the coat and physique of a pointer. He also has the higher energy of a pointer. Pointers make labs look calm! At age 3 1/2 now, he's finally settling down and coming into his own. I got him from an Eastern Shore auto repair shop near Chincoteague when he was about 17 weeks old. He sure has it made with me- total bachelor pad all around.

Local folklore has it that Leroy Grumman designed the folding wing for the carrier based aircraft in a local luncheonette called Von Leeson's in Farmingdale, NY (also the home of the former Republic Aircraft). We used to eat there many years ago when we lived in Farmingdale.....

What is this padded seat things? Canoes are designed to be paddled when kneeling.

Regardless, looks like you did a great job on the restoration.
