The 4th of July in watch Hill has been a little uneventful in past years and we have always heard so much about Bristol.

We have been there by car, but never by boat. I was thinking of calling the Herreshoff Museum to see if they had a slip for Sunday and Monday. If I don't have any luck there does anyone have any recommendations, we would like to be walkable to town. Does Stone Harbour rent slips overnight?

Dan,

Bristol is great for the 4th. We've done it the past several years. This will be the first year in some time that we will not be there. There is no better view of the fireworks than from a boat in the harbor. Consult the official website for schedules. I believe the fireworks are always the night of the 3rd. I think the parade is on the 5th this year.

I don't think Herreshoff has slips. They may have moorings available. The only problem with out there is it's a bit rockey, espesially with anything out of the SW which is prevailing. Try contacting Bristol Marine. Their moorings are farther in (no slips). It's a bit of a walk to town but their launch will run you over to the town dock. You could also try Bristol Yacht Club. I know they have reciprocity with other yacht clubs. If you can get a mooring there, they have very nice facilities and a beautiful front lawn with view of the harbor. They are also on the opposite side of the harbor from town but their launch will run you over also.

I was able to secure a berth at Stone Harbour for the 4th and 5th. Should be a good time.

I found the link for the festivities and it looks like the fireworks are 9:30 on the 4th

Thanks for the info.

Interesting, how did you get the slip at stone harbor. I thought it was all private for the condo owners?

I asked for a recommendation from one of the other marinas that was full up and she gave me the guys number for Stone Harbour. I got the feeling that he was squeezing us in.

That's great. It's an ideal location right in town. Quito's restaurant is right next door fantastic seafood if you're interested. Plenty of other good places too. You'll have a great time.

Prospective-

Thanks for the info, My wife is unusually excited to go somewhere on the boat.

I've only been to Bristol by car on several occasions when we were keeping the boat over in Brewers Sakonett. I know that we at at a bar resturuant with a roof top deck, but I dont remeber the name. we also ate at The Lobster Pot one time.

What can you tell me about the fire works? do you know where they shoot them off from.

You'll have a great time and are in an ideal spot. The bar/restaurant you're thinking off is JG Goffs and is a 2min walk from where you are. The Lobster Pot is overrated in my opinion. Quito's is much better although not as "elegant". My favorites are the seafood pasta or the fried clam bellies. If you would like a cozy italian meal go to Roberto's on main street. Mid priced, very nice.

Fireworks are shot off from the road that runs along the north end of the harbor. Assuming you don't have a giant yacht immediatly next to you to the north, you will have a totally unobstructed view of the fireworks as they burst over the northmost part of the harbor. They will shoot them off well after sunset, probably around 9pm. They will last for about 30-45min. There will be big crowds and after the fireworks you'll be able to observe the chaos as you relax on your boat.

The only downsides for me to Bristol are that it's too close to home... we can drive there in 10min so we're there often. And the harbor is a bit rockey with any kind of wind since it's open to the prevailing SW breeze.

By the way, if you stay at Stoneharbor, do they let you use the pool? It looks really nice and is right on the harbor. If they let you use it that is sweet!

I'll be thinking of you while I'm on Cuttyhunk!

Great pics. I 'm sure you had a good time. Did they give you access to the pool?

No, but that was a nice pool and boy was my wife wanting it. Temps that week were into the high 90's.

The parade was great. We were told that we should get up around 4:30am to set our chairs out, but we didnt and were still able to find a nice alcove of a closed resturaunt and stayed out of the sun for the 2 1/2 hour ordeal. i got a kick out of seeing Buddy Cianci, as I was in the middle of reading a book about him.

On Monday night the wind picked up out of the south west and we were rocking pretty well. Two of the condo owners who had their boats there talked to the dock manager and got us a slip inside which was nice.

The ride home on Tuesday was great. We had taken the week off so we did not have to rush, even though we I pushed the throttle up a tad and saw 29-30 knots all the way out of the bay (we normally cruise around 26-27K). We were back in Westerly before noon. Its was really nice.

I have considered selling the boat and getting something a bit smaller in the past couple of months, but trips like these really make me question those thoughts.
