Hi I was just told that the ring gear on our LSR 2100 has a broken tooth. It has not given us any trouble or warning in the past. The marina was commisioning for the spring and said the starter was making a strange noise. On invetigation they found a missing tooth on the ring gear.

I am curious as to what might have caused this without warning? Is there anything we should be watching for in the repair of this problem. I understand that the engine will need to come out.

The engine is a carburated 5LTR Mercruiser 2001 model.

Don, suggest you post this in Engines/Electrical. The I/O make/model is more important in this case than the fact it's in a Regal.

It's definitely something that has to be replaced. It won't fix itself. I have no idea as to what caused it, things happen. I would also get a look at the gear on the starter. If there is any wear on it replace that gear as well, much easier to do while the engine is out. Cost of the parts is pretty cheap, labor is going to be the big part and most of that is pulling/reinstalling the engine.
