BUI Suspect drowns while in custody

Sounds like the jacket was just put over the mans arms without his arms passing through the arm holes. So when he hit the water it just slipped off.
 
Certainly does and seems likely that there will be changes in procedure for how PFDs are worn by arrestees.
 
The jacket fell off a drunk whose hands were cuffed behind him. He didn't stand a chance.

I have to agree changes will be coming. It's bad enough being BUI but the death penalty?
Of coarse I'm sort of joking about the penalty.

As a person who has made hundreds of arrests and been involved in thousands, all i can say is wow. Solo transporting of a prisoner is dangerous to the prisoner and the officer.In this case deadly.

I didn't know this was a solo transport, that's a disaster in the making.

I can say this with a high degree of certainty there is no way the arresting officer wanted this outcome.

After the lawyers for the dead guy get done, the arresting officer will be lucky to still have a job. I'm sure he didn't intend that outcome but the vultures will do their best to rip him to pieces I fear.
 
This is going to cost the state quite a bit of coin. The kids family must be devastated. I am just shocked that they transport alone, on a boat. I've had all sorts of crap bounce out of boats over the years, stuff i thought was secure. I witnessed a loaded cooler bounce out of a boat right in front of me after we were all treated to a nasty wake. I don't know how you can run the boat and properly watch the prisoner at the same time. Article mentions the officer was a state trooper from the highway patrol. I wonder if he is a fulltimer on the boats or just detailed for the summer months. You could wrap a vest around someone and tighten the straps til the person turns blue but that vest is still going to pop off when a full grown man hits the water with some force.
 
It's really sad for all parties because it reads like the kid jumped out of the boat intentionally. I sure the officer never thought that was going to happen. Not that it excuses him for not putting the PFD on properly.
 
From another perspective, the kid decided to drink , get loaded, and arrested. Then he decided to try to swim with handcuffs.

Wonder what is the legal drinking age in that town?

Did anyone think that his Granny would say anything other than the kid was a scholar, athlete and altar boy?

Sometimes things don't work out they way you plan.
 
I can't imagine how bad the cop feels, and to think of the terror of the guy sinking with his hands tied. A tragedy all around.

That's why you immediately put a type I PFD on them, and do it right, before you even double lock. You WILL float just fine in a type I while properly restrained. Scary as hell, though. Not something I care to ever try again.
