Building Starfish 26... First sail!!

Great design -- love her lines and I can't wait to see how the anchoring scheme and folding transom work out. Nice compromise in the wood/foam construction too. This is the boat I'd want if I were going to start sailing again!

just finished glassing the starboard side.... was much easier than I expected and having the hull tilted over made it a lot easier. the cloth is 6oz so that it appears transparent, I stapled it to the hull at the top, staple marks are not an issue since there will a wide Herreshoff styled wood rub rail.

I used the West special hardener 207 which is thinner and results in an extra clear finish. Despite the 90 deg temp, there was plenty of time to apply the epoxy.

Naomi mixed the epoxy 10 pumps at a time, then poured it in a paint tray. I applied it with a West System roller and it saturated the fabric and cedar very well.

there will be 2 more coats of epoxy on the fabric above WL. Below WL, it's going to be 2 layers of heavier S glass followed by 3 coats of epoxy

Pascal your a real craftsman simply beautiful work!
Wow,
Bill

Thanks guys! Got two more coats of epoxy on and marked the waterline using a laser level ... Hope to have the port side done tomorrow!

need to measure the opening under the aft seat, i wonder if I can install a honda genny in there... :)

So the next obvious question is: "When are you comeing over to do mine?" :-)

Good job Pascal.

Since this is your design how did you determine the waterline?

rick, it went very well but it's only 6oz glass above WL and it wets very well... also the West 207 hardener isn't has thick has the regular hardener.

Bruce, Waterline is set where i want it and ballast calculated accordingly based on displacement and boat weight. since ballast is internal i'm going to play it safe and finalize ballast location.

Did the dog ever move during the glassing?

Just great work, I bet you are pleased with the progress.

It's still an intimidating job to glass a whole boat hull. It's got me a little worried. I'm impressed with how yours came out Pascal. Will the finish be clear or will you paint the hull?

If I remember correctly my bottom panels will be 33oz quadaxial with a 10 oz satin finish layer. The keel is double that of the bottom panels with 22 oz carbon fiber top layer. Sides are 1708 0/90 and 1208 45/45 and a 10 oz finish layer. There's also an extra 22 oz carbon fiber panel in the bow strike zone. That's a lotta material going on! :-) All in it should consume at least 15 gallons of epoxy.

Beautiful job Pascal! I am not a blow boater, but I do appreciate a wood hull. The outside wood on the hull is stunning. I am sure you are going to leave it unpainted.

got the starboard side of the hull below water line glassed up plus a first coat of pigmented epoxy.

yeah it's going to be natural above WL, just a single layer of 6oz glass. below water line, there are two additional layers of glass (10oz S-Glass) on the outside. Inside is 3 layers of 10oz S-Glass above and below.

starting to glass the port side, below WL today. on that last pic, the bottom of the blue tape is the actual waterline. Paint extends a little higher, with a thin red line.

Have you figured out how you are going to get it out of the back yard?

on a trailer... the gate is wide enough. just.

Very nice job!

I don't know if you've experienced this yet, but be cautious using those epoxy pumps. I have found that when using those pumps, they don't always dispense the exact amount and the mixture ends up being off. I prefer using graduated cups. It's more accurate and much faster as well.
