That's definately his whaler.

I don't blame him for calling help. He made the smart move there.

I blame him for taking boating for granted. Not knowing his equipment or his abilities. Not checking the weather.
He could of easily made it home slowly with radar and gps but he took the easy way out that cost the taxpayer's extra!
 
Just beware if you have an operational radar on board your vessel and are involved in a collision/striking/allision and attempt to use the defense that "I didn't know how to use the radar" you will be hung out to dry. The rules caution you to Maintain an adequate lookout so as to ascertain the risk of collision by all means available. If you don't know how to use an operational radar on your boat, either learn how or remove it. If you have a radar on board that is not operational remove it too.

A radar doesn't do you a lick of good unless you know what you're looking at. I have my radar on 100% of the time, day or night, fog or clear. Familiarize yourself with your local area.

Anyway, yes, radar should be during clear weather. Absolutely. This way you get familiar with the display home along the way so when times are bad the confidence level goes up. Does that mean you can go faster because you have been there?

No.

Because your radar may NOT pick up all targets and I can tell you that from personal experience that tweeking gain or other parameters can render your radar totally ineffective.
 
I hate strong pop up thunderstorms more than fog. I have to admit my FLIR does pretty good in fog, not perfect especially if it's pea soup.
He should have had his return tracks on the MFD? I guess with the outcome he made the right decision.

Not that he cares about my opinion, but I totally give him a break on this one. No alcohol or impairment, and was not taking crazy risks. I seriously doubt he will repeat that scenario - at least in a careless manner. Heck, I have terrible night vision and, for that reason, simply do not boat at night anymore. I know our lake very well, but become disoriented on the 'dark' nights with no moonlight. When I had a runabout and was down closer to the water and smaller in size, I felt more comfortable.

For those of you out of liberty landing, correct me if I'm wrong but, fog 30 miles up river is VERY rare. And I work in Jersey City / NYC and fog is very rare there.

Sorry but I have no issue with FDNY using their shiny fire boat for some public service. That's why they are there.
