At one time, PM was available to all. Then is was misused and is currently restricted to those who contribute to the operation of the site ( ie: have an anchor next to their screen name )
If you actually have an incoming message, the sender should know better, and may simply post the message to you publicly. In any event, I doubt you are missing anything, and unless you are a paid subscriber, the message will sit there till the heat death of the universe ( or equivalent
