This is sorta related to my question about removing pitting from aluminum but with a different twist.
My boat (2002) came with Sunbrella canvas covers for anything that could possible covered up. The PO apparently loved canvas. In addition to the bridge enclosure and the cockpit awning, he covered the seats, consoles, teak name boards, running lights, hatches, windows, ports and the really beautiful Lofrans Tigres horizontal windlass with "protective" canvas.
Today I removed all the covers in preparation for a touch up detailing scheduled for this week....and I noticed that the windless is starting to pit. Damn.
I am beginning to think that covers on metal, especially aluminum are not good. Most of my other pitting is on the bottom side of the cockpit cover frame. The tubing that holds up the hard top is fine.
I can understand protection from the sun, but a windlass?
So, any other canvas fans in here?
