Canvas with mildew...help!

Can any one suggest a cleaning method for removing mildew from a canvas cover.

Can it be cleaned in a washing machine with cold water and mild detergent?

I had a problem with some canvas backpacks I kept in my basement. A friend told me to use TSP mixed with water. It was very effective in killing and removing the mildew. I used a spray bottle and a damp cloth. Good luck.

Trisodium phosphate-available at any hardware store. Used for cleaning walls and siding prior to painting.
 
Bleach like Clorox works well. Dilute solution and make sure you use plenty of fresh water to rinse it well. Air dry in the sun if you can. You said you can put it in a washing machine. Add the bleach to the machine and run it on cold with some laundry detergent. Air dry in the sun, if you try to put it in the dryer, it might shrink up some and not fit as well.
 
I agree with SilverBullet. I take my bimini down; go to a public laundry; put my bimini in a large commercial-sized washing machine using cold water, Woolite detergent and bleach. It then gets air-dried and coated with 303 Fabric Waterproofing/protectorant.
 
Did just that at the local laundry using Oxi clean and came out looking brand new.

BTW: If you wash your canvas cover or bimini, put it back on the boat while it's wet and fasten it down so it doesn't shrink when it dries.
