Amazingly small underwater volume for such a large ship. The pilot was still aboard so they didn't get far.
 
The crew of a cargo ship deliberately grounded to save it from capsizing have been praised for their "great skill".

Why would they not still be on board?
 
I was thinking Cougar Ace too. We see these ships delivering cars near our home. There's also a terminal where Carnival Fascination ties up, and the resemblance of the hull styles, looking at them in profile, is quite similar. Can't see of course what the underwater body of Fascination looks like. Hoping not to...

I assume when they say "pilot", they mean the pilot who actually is in charge only when coming into or leaving the harbor. had everything been going well, he probably would have left the ship after traveling a few more miles.
 
I'm thinking their great skill did not include managing ballast.
 
You have to wonder how those things stay upright. Looks like it is right outside Cowes, IOW. A very busy piece of water serving Southampton & Portsmouth. Cross it a few times in something called a sidewalled hovercraft & also on a hydrofoil ferry.
 
Interesting to read it developed a severe list shortly after leaving port. Wonder what could have caused that so quickly?Also would like to hear a report of how much of the automobile and heavy equipment cargo has shifted.

Unfortunately for them , it looks pretty high aground and after today's full moon they will be dealing with progressively lower high tides for a couple weeks.
 
If they just finished unloading in Southampton, there is not much to take off besides bunkers to help refloat.

Bring in the Highway Through Hell crew. They will get her upright within one episode, no problem.
 
Wonder how much damage was done to the cars onboard?

If I remember right, Mazda scrapped all of the cars even if there was no physical damage because they stayed tilted at such a severe angle for too long a period of time.
 
The COUGAR ACE link above says all the cars in that ship's cargo were scrapped.
