St Vincent and Belize registered vessels detained in Britain
London, England, May 22, 2006 - Two vessels flying flags of two CARICOM states were detained at British ports for safety violations.
The Maritime and Coast Guard Agency of Britain says that the refrigerated vessel BAROY registered in St Vincent was detained for two days with seven deficiencies including compass in poor condition, oily water separator not operating properly and failure to implement the Safety Management System as evidenced by the condition and operation of the vessel. It is the second time this year that this vessel was detained and may now be banned from entering ports of the European Union unless the safety violations are corrected.
Under the Paris Memorandum of Understanding, St Vincent and the Grenadines is one of the flags listed as "high risk" and vessels flying that flag could be banned from entering port for normal commercial business. The Barody is operated by PSH Shipping of Norway and was detained in Port Grimsby on April 4, 2006.
The second vessel detained was a general cargo ship, the A P Smile, operated by Nevada Shipping. It was detained, April 13, for one day at Port Grangemouth for seven deficiencies related to having no effective means of control of main machinery. The Belize flag which was previously listed a "high risk" under the Paris MOU has now been lowered to "medium risk".
As of May 16, 2006 the Paris MOU lists as "high risk" the flags of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Turkey and those in the "medium risk" group are: Belize, Brazil, Egypt, Panama, Romania, Taiwan, and Ukraine. (Caribbean360)
