Carter AFB-4476SA carbs hold fuel smell when hot

Carter AFB-4476SA carbs hold fuel in well of secondary. Chrysler M440's vintage 1975. There are wells on the secondary side that hold counterbalance weights for the butterflys of the secondaries. These wells are collecting fuel and when the engines are hot after a bit of a run, there is a fuel smell in the aft cabin of the boat. Lasts till the engines cool down. About 4-6 hours. Been tracing this for a few years and finally determined it is due to the fuel sitting in the wells and evaporating from the heat of the engines. Anyone have any ideas as to why fuel would collect here? could a couple of pilot holes be drilled to let the fuel run into the carb, are the carbs shot? they have been rebuilt 3 times for other reasons and the problem is still there. Any ideas what to do? do I need to replace carbs?
