I am considering replacing the Carver name emblems on my 86 3297 Mariner. These emblems are about 2 ft long by 4-6" tall and are mounted on the side panels along the upper deck. They are made of chromed plastic which are pitted and the black paint on the sand-texture background is peeling off. Debating whether to redo the black background or if the cost is not prohibitve, buy new. Ram, do you know if they are still available and what the cost may be?
 
I replaced mine on my 44CMY. I ordered them from the service department at Staten Island Boat Sales. If I remember correctly, they were about $10 or so each. Call your local dealer.
 
Joe, cmariners are way different nameplates. that being said, his are not available any longer. I don't remember them ever being plastic, ours always seemed to be metal as I've had to replace them on several boats adn they were quite heavy.

cmariner32...the only thing I can recommend is to replace them with the newest style

My company was the manufacturer of the metal Carver nameplates. There were zinc cast and chrome-plated at our Philadelphia plant. Carver switched to chrome-plated plastic years ago. Unfortunately, neither the zinc Carver nameplates or our Philadelphia plant exist any longer.
 
I believe the new ones are water cut stainless steel and done at the factory in Pulaski

Didn't know that. SS is much better then either chrome-plated products in a marine environment.
 
Hey Kenny,

Do they still make the Trojan badges? I was thinking of replacing mine on my 2001 440 Express.
 
I just emailed Vince too, I would let him wonder what is driving all of this interest in name plates for a few days before you enlighten him.

By the way, how do you get the old ones off?

Bob...I'm not sure..Vince will have to check with Carver to see...I suggest sending him an e-mail as well :-)
 
I have the same vessel. Mine is an '86 and they are made of metal (pot, zinc, etc) and are chrome plated. The one side had some minor pitting to which I polished with a fine steel wool and covered with a coat of clear poly. What made me decide to keep the old was that I took black paint and repainted the embossing and they look great. Being 23 years old, I do not expect her to be perfect, but I am very satisfied with the outcome. I would suggest trying it first and see what you think. I probably spent 30 minutes per side and used old materials I had laying around. Not perfect, but the cost was $0.00!

I would be interested to know how much they are getting for a new set, I'm sure it's not cheap.

You could also take to a local plating shop and leave with them to run through the dip when they have enough other projects to do. When my dad did a frame off restoration on a corvette, that's how he did the chrome on the cheap.

Looking closer at my 86, it does appear to be pot metal. The carver letters have some major pitting as this boat has been in saltwater most of its life. I was considering repainting the embossing like you did but the pits on the letter seemed to be the stumbling block. I just might try polishing the letters like you did and coating it with some clear polyurethane. Was just hoping that carver still made them and they wouldn't cost more than just an arm and half.
 
Any of you that have e-mails to us waiting for pricing on names...please be patient as Vince just added Service Manager to his job title and is in the process of consolidating the departments into one. I am helping him with that, and unbelievably, it's quite a job!
 
Starry night please let me know if you locate them my sides are missing completely and would like to replace. The rear is just worn out from the flag pole holder hitting it. I don't believe Mine originally mentioned Caver on them but so be it.
Also if it's OK when you getting ready to cut the top I'd love to take a look at how they wrapped it being that mine didn't hold up to well. I would even be will to help you remove it if you need a hand. Let me know.
 
Ok, so I've decided to remove the side rail panels from the boat and bring them home to paint the carver badges. Jim, what kind of clear poly did you paint yours with? I would think regular clear lacquer would not hold up well, especially here in Florida-repainted cars with clear coat last only a year or two before wholesale failure even with frequent waxing. Is there a better sealer to use that might hold up better in a marine environment? Also, the side panels themselves-are they fiberglass with a gel coat finish? The surface of mine do not seem to be gelcoat, unless it is very oxidized and worn, it looks to be a painted surface. I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've never tried to buff them out to see. Does anyone know whether they can be revived with some finessit II and wax?
 
There is a place called Chromeemblems.com they sell chrome plated plastic letters and numbers - cheap! I replace my emblems with these and went with new model style.
