Carver sinking fast

How would you slip the towline under that kind of tension?

RWS

Normally one of the crew is responsible for monitoring the tow, and would have the ability to slip it - of course, this would be coordinated with the helm.

Cutting that line, under that tension . . . has got the potential for serious personal damage.

I have ALWAYS kept a sheathed knife at the helm...

Take turns off the bitt or clear until the line starts to pay out, then step away.
Right before I got to Yaquina Bay the Victory had a herring seiner on short tow under the bridge that capsized. They cut the line at the bit with an axe as the Vic was getting pulled over. It explained the deep gash in the tow bitt I was inquiring about. 🤦‍♂️

Yeah, the axe to the tow bitt thing is a prime example of Cuttermen bringing ideas that don’t apply to Motor Lifeboats. Back in the 44 days every now and then someone would think they should bring the axe out of the turtle back in case the tow started sinking. That’s a hard no! I can imagine the reactions to someone doing it to a 52 - especially the Vic! Pretty sure that’s the one that got busted up pretty bad in some big stuff 5-10 years ago.

Sad and scary to watch. I've towed boats before, not sure why they kept the tow line on that long, it could have pulled their boat down.

Well, we busted it up pretty bad in 90' on the high spot south of the south jetty. 2 front windows gone, stbd side window gone, and a whole bunch of water draining from the pilothouse to the galley and eventually to the engine room when I opened the door. What a mess.
