I'm hopin someone can source me (Ramsport) where I can get Carver's gray vinyl striping that was used in the mid 80's boats. I'm redoing the striping on my Mariner and so far have been unable to find a source for the 1" or 1 1/4" wide gray stripes. Anyone? Thanks.

Sorry cmariner32, Carver stopped supplying the '80s grey about 10 years ago. In fact, they've started painting on their boot strip, so I'm thinking all striping is going away. Best I can tell you is, so to a sign maker and match up the colors. Unfortunately they won't have them "together" but we had a customer get the striping individually, and I put it on for him...straight even. The only place where you'll have an issue is where the cabin side striping wraps up and over by the hatches, those two areas were die cut and I don't believe you'll be able to find them.

Hope this helps...go to ebay and search...boat stripping ...there are a few colors there that may help.

We replaced our striping last year. It was Navy Blue and Teal; so '90s looking. We replaced the striping with Grey and Navy, and it looks much nicer.

I actually did a How To article on it in Motorboating Magazine - It was published in Feb 08; page 120.

The striping was made by TFX, and I got it here:

For the upper helm, I used 1/2" grey and navy, separated by a 1/2" gap.

For the hull, I used a 1" navy stripe, then a 1/2" grey stripe, then a 1/2" navy stripe, which built the stripe up to 2".

I could not find a good source of wide multi-color stripes, but as it turned out, the narrower stripes bend around the hull and flybridge better anyway.

The project cost about $100, for both the stripes and removal wheels (which I found was easier for old, brittle stripes).

The removal wheel I bought on eBay, but it is a common auto body item that is designed to remove stripes when they do body work on an automobile.

Thanks for the link awboater. Looks like they might have what I need. It's interesting that Carver would drop a very popular color combo like black and gray-boats in 80's and 90's used that color scheme. To me, nothing looks as good a black sunbrella against a Carver white gelcoat and striping to match.

That's a neat project!!!

A friend of mine plans to replace the maroon (aftermarket) stripes on my 2896. According to him you can place masking tape along the lines left in the gelcoat after removing the old stripes (kind of a little raised edge, whiter in color than the rest of the hull), then put a big piece of the maroon tape over it, then CAREFULLY go along the bumps caused by the masking tape underneath in order to create a decent straight edge on the new stripes. According to him you'll end up with 2 parallel stripes that way, matching the old. I'll let you all know how he makes out...

Just for kicks, try King's Cave in Hastings, MN
A little over a year ago, I bought some of that grey striping from them and they had some left.
Thier not a Carver dealer any more but still have a handful of parts.

1990 was the last year they used the grey/black striping. We got to a point where no one needed it anymore, the adhesive dried up on all that we had in stock, so we threw it away. I know that sounds like blasphemy, but it was not usable. Fact is, people were going elsewhere to re-do their striping, so they ended their supply. Funny thing is, they were less expensive than anyone I've seen, plus it matched perfectly.

Its amazing how the factory product often is the better option rather than aftermarket. For example I know that Stingray Boats does a phenomenal job on things like the canvas installation, or the in-dash depth finder, stuff like that. When you buy aftermarket in these instances, a customer can expect to pay double or triple what they could have gotten from the factory, even as a replacement part!!!

Agreed Pete...We sell Carver supplied bilge vents for late 80's Montego series and others for (I believe) $7.95, or you can go to West and pay $15.00 or more for something that MAY fit.

CMariner.

Look at this web site. Pro Stripe. This is used in the Auto and Marine industry. You can purchase them through any Auto Detailing store. These are the stores that supply autobody shops. I used them when I re-striped my 1988 Carver 34 Montego. They come in packs of 40', 50', or 150' roll. Widths from 1/8" to 2".
