Saw this in Newsday on line today.

A boater whose vessel caught fire as it pulled away from the dock at Cedar Beach Marina in Babylon escaped injury Friday by jumping into the water, Suffolk County police said.

A police spokeswoman said the boat fire started at about 10:45 a.m. and the vessel then drifted away from the marina about 40 feet before the man jumped into the water.

It traveled another 10 feet or so before being stopped by an automatic anchor device, the spokeswoman said.
The Babylon Fire Department responded and needed about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, police said.

Police said the cause of the fire is unknown but initially does not appear to be criminal in nature.

Don, rumor has it, as soon as you started the engines on your boat, the boat untied itself and automatically went to cedar beach ;)
 
I was there, really scary. I was about in middle slip having first bloody mary when I saw the boat smoking. Bow coming at the slips. I ran below, grabbed fire extinguisher and ran towards boat. He was on fly bridge trying to start apparently. Saw him run down the ladder, open the hatch and curse...."holy S#$%, it's gonna blow!!!!". He ran towards the bow and jumped overboard. The boat's bow was just inside the slip but the wind pushed him back out and then with a westerly wind....watched the boat drift pulpit to pulpit with mine......wonderful.......

Well....I figure this puppy is gonna blow sky and take out my boat (and my cocktail as well) but wind picked up slightly and pushed more northerly into the cove....until...I saw his anchor drop and of course....hook first time about 60 feet off my bow......fuel (145gal on board) caught and all hell broke loose.

Cap put a bunch of $ into the boat. Really a nice looking vessel (1974 Pacemaker).

Real bummer, Suffolk did a good job, I'll post some pics

The anchor dropped because of my luck.....it couldn't just keep drifting away from my boat, it had to hook. Couldn't have made that thing hook that fast with that little rode if my life depended on it........
