I am familiar with refinishing varnished teak britework when coated with typical varnish products, but my new boat has a Cetol finish on the covering boards. The finish is in good condition, but will need a fresh coat come spring. The only thing I do not like particularly is the orangish tint that is normal with regular Cetol.

What are my option for recoating?. Is it worth it to recoat with the newer clear Cetol?

What are the normal steps of cetol refinishing? Do I sand and recoat like varnish? i thought that I read recently that one does not have to wory about brush marks with Cetol. Whay would that be?

Thanks
Dan

I used the "light" cetol and it looks really good. Not as "orange" as the regular stuff. Not sure about recoating -- haven't done it yet, but getting close. Try their web site or direction on the container. Good luck.

You can use the lighter style as a top coat.

To recoat just wet sand with green or red scuffy pads. Dry, tack and recoat. I'd put on at least two coats.

Cetol seems thinner than most varnishes so it flows out differently. So you are less likely to get brush marks. But if you use foam brushes you will not have any brush marks to worry about anyway.

Good stuff, thanks for the response.

Do you think that If I use the Cetol clear for a few years, the amount of orange will lessen?

Once the color is on there, you have to remove it to get the orange out. If you put light on top, it at least won't get much darker. I've seen a dockmate just put varnish over the top of the cetol. So far, looks like it is adhering just fine (keyed in coat) and adds a very nice gloss to it.

They have a natural color cetol now, that is pretty darn close to the color that it would be if you varnished it. I do this for a living, and Cetol sands very easy. I would sand off the old finish with 80 grit and then refinish with the new finish.
