Ok, not enough info in the story to know why a distress call never went out, but this is exactly why my boats “ditch bag” goes with me in any boat I go offshore on. If it hits the fan I want to be sure people know It is bad and that I can be located.

Out of cellphone range? <sigh>

--------------

OT: When I went to take wet delivery on my new boat ( a day trip, decades ago ) I packed up my "captain's bag", containing redundant everything. Maps, flares, VHF HT, GPS, !compass!. Even spare cigs.

I met my buddy who had agreed to ride along as "a spare". He got there, helped load up food etc.

... then he pulled out his " captain's bag", a virtual duplicate to mine! :)

Plan fot it. "It" will happen. And when it does, if you planned, it might just be an unscheduled day off, rather than a disaster.

Heck, when I took my new to me boat across Lake Michigan, a four hour tour, I had a sat phone, Epirb, handheld, etc.

Not that I am for more government regulations, but Epirbs are relatively cheap these days.
