I did just that years ago on an old scowl that I had.
The connections will remain the same at the engine. Two cables.
The difference will be at the controls up on the bridge.
You need to make sure that your new bridge controls don't lock in the neutral position. If they do, then the lower controls will not be able to operate properly.

I'd suggest getting some professional info from whomever you will be buying the controls from.
