Correction 205sse cuddy cabin

I am a NOOB.a riends boat, I want to help get it winterized, and he does not move fast enough in my eyes?

1. I will need the quickest way to do this , and what is the easist way to do so. He has a gallon of anti freeze Bio degradable marine application.

2. and what is the correct way so I may go about it next year?

3 I have searched online and came up to this site and empty handed?

4 if pics are needed i shalpp supply when at the boat and back online.
If a piccan be poste or a link I will view it? thank you ever so much
NYC and 20 degrees expected soon

p.s. if it were me Octoberwould have been done. wewarm it up but I understand it will not last if not taken care of? thanx again Fishyc

My best suggestion....do you have any seasoned boating buddies? Someone who has been around the docks a few times?
If so, enlist their help for this first time. Believe me, it will go so much better to do it that way.
This is not rocket science, but just having someone who knows what to do to help you the first time to show you the minor and major details and the easy ways to do it.

What engines, Volvo or Merc? Raw water cooled or closed cooled? We already had a freeze back in Dec here, you may already have damage. If this guy can afford a 290 Chap he should take it to the pros or get a mobile marine mechanic to do it. That is a complex boat, twin engines, water/waste system, etc, not as easy as doing a 20' single I/O.
as far as antifreeze for the engines, if they are raw water cooled, you need 4-5 gallons per engine, then you need some for the sink, toilet, water heater if you have one, etc. If the motors are closed cooled you only need to drain the raw water side of them (heat exchanger, exhaust risers).

Imay have the boat wron but it is a 20 footer murcruiser engine water colled not closed

no damage is done as wwe are running the engine as it is cold.

I have read up, and am doing my best t o get out there sunday jan 14th.
it is a matter of throwing antifreeze and pulling plugs

boaters by the dock yep We'll grab ourriend if have to
live and learn.

I just need to be pointed in the rightdirection thanx

Get a bucket. Get a hose and a pair of "muffs" at your local marine store. Remove props from outdrive shafts and store inside.
Run engine on muffs until engines are heated up (You can do one at a time.)

Fill bucket with pink antifreeze (about 4-5 gallons per engine).

With engines hot, put outdrive intake into bucket (they sell winterizing kits that have a bucket with a hose connection for fitting to muffs). Suck up all pink antifreeze into engine WITHOUT letting it suck air!
Cover shaft splines with a trash bag and tape shut (You should add grease to the shafts before taping shut.)

Use remainder of antifreeze in bucket for drains, bilge, toilets, what-have-you.

Drain all fresh-water systems. Disconnect hose at fresh-water pump. Leave drains open.
Drain hot water heater by removing hoses and opening pressure-relief valve and drain on water heater.
The important thing is to drain ALL the water from the hoses. If it sits in the hoses, it can crack the hoses if it freezes.

thank you for the Quick response, I believe the boat is of a signature series and a 290 hp not the 290 itself a 20 footer. it is in the water, and cannot take anything off outside,

I have found the two Vlue wing nuts plugs (plastic) and , disconnected the Upper hose of the left side?
Could not find anymore blue wing nuts plugs.
I closed up the upper winnut plug, and then proceeded to Pour anti-freeze in, the Proper bio degradable one that is enviormental friendly. and then slowely a lil at a time till i sseen it start to come out the bottom hole, and then closed up, poured the remainder 1 gallon in
I believe we may need to buy one more gallon to finish off the job, but it is all in the bottom of the block

I am happy, my friend is happy and it only taken 10 minutes to drain amazing, here is a small video of it draining
Sorry the Lighting andweather was foul, and getting the boat winterized was More important than the filming but yes it will be a great DIY for those Like me never done one
WOW 15 minutes of my time and m friend will give me a free summers fun is 2007
thanks everyone......

Watched your vid, hard to tell if you got it all out, but as a general procedure on raw water cooled I/Os you will have 2 block drains, 2 manifold/riser drains, and sometimes a drain on the power steering cooler. There may be additional coolers as well. To start, remove all drain plugs. I poke the drain holes with a big screw since sometimes they clog up with rust and will not drain. Then drain the raw water intake hose from the transom, you disconnect it at the thermostat housing, and point it down in the bilge. On OMCs and Volvos this will also drain the power steering cooler, not sure on Mercs. Then you have to disconnect the big hose that goes from the front circulating pump on the front of the engine, and connects to the thermo housing. What I do is remove all the plugs and drain hoses. Then I start to fill each manifold with AF thru the hoses until a little comes out the drain, then replace the drain and fill the rest of the way (you will hear it run out the exhaust opening on the ground, why you mustuse no tox). Re-connect the manifold hoses at the thermo housing. Then I fill the engine thru the big hose in front, with it connected at the circ pump and disconnected at the thermo housing. When AF starts coming out the drains, I replace them and fill the block+heads, it will take about 2 gallons. Then I reconnect the big hose at the thermo housing. Then I fill the raw water intake hose until full and re-connect it to the thermo housing. Some AF may drain out of the water intakes on the lower unit, but that is OK. If you are in the water, you might not want to do this step as it can put AF in the water, it is really for protecting the raw water impeller in the drive.
This method is safer than having the raw water pump suck AF up thru the drive since you don't have to worry if the thermo opened or not.

BTW, just thought that, if the boat is in the water, be careful draining the raw water intake hose, water can come in the boat if the end of hose is lower than the water line, I guess you could drain it quick and then reconnect.

I see you are located in Bklyn NY, is that where the boat is? In salt water? At least salt freezes at a lower temp than fresh (about 28* F) but you should tell your friend that leaving an IO boat in the water when it can freeze solid is a bad plan, since the ice can cut the bellows and cause it to sink. Pretty much no one leaves IO boats in the water all winter around here, unless they are in a marina and can use a bubbler to keep ice from forming.

Luec thank you for the advice. I'll. we'll go down and locate the other two, if possable, I'll feal around More i did my best on short notice LOL.
In the water and safer than before. at least there is Af inside the block.

I do appologise. As i now see my mistake i totallythought my friends boat was a 290 series LMOA,, and it is a 205sse cuddy cabin, maybe the 290 was the HP on the boat that stuck in my mind all thetime LOL I do appologise to all thnk you

Well, whatever boat you've got,

make sure you put some stabilizer in the fuel. Try to run some through the "Whatever engine your're talking about", LOL...

The procedure could be the same, really, for whatever gas engine you have...

You'll be sorry if you don't pull the boat and it freezes in the slip. THAT can tear a boat up.

thank you All that we know of Stabilizers to the gas and Foging. just that We did not know the proceedures of the drain.
I tell you how simple it was when two heads were Put together LOL We lost a Plug it dissapeared in the engine Bay. wil lreplace and satasfied with the emergency patch.
here is a Picture http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/9484/wintervm6.jpg
If the site allows a pic if not the Link is here.

We found all 4 plugs, redrained the engine , and opened all four hoses and got 4 gallons of AF
We are good to go for the Winter, Now in 36hours the temps will hit 20 degrees and warm up and drop to 29 and snow.

Yhe slip will not freez as We know our area?
again thank you for all the help. and the title is corrected.

Is this a 4.3 Liter V-6, if so the 4 gallons is about right, I have the same engine in my old OMC. Looks like you got it just in time for the freeze coming on Wed. Once you have done it a couple of times the winterization routine doesn't take too long, to change the motor oil and filter, drive oil, drain all the water, fill up with AF takes me about 2 hrs.

LueC 290 stuck in my Mind may a pick 3 Numer
190 hp or 290 hp. I believe it may be a 4 or possably a 6. Yep need to count the Plugs LOL. it is a good boat.

Here is the vid I put together and not happy, do to the weather and lighting. I could have taken my time so others can learn from my videos. They say "see one, do one, teach one"

We gotto the boat, and taken us like 5 minutes to find all the plugs not even, and I placed a mirror on the bottom , so helpful to look down than on my stomach and back cramped positioning LOL

Yes the next one which was like now was realy easy. 5 gallons 1 1/2 gal. on the side so when it rains and we're visiting the boat to place in the Bilage , always on top of it AF in there .

Time to do was like 30 minutes but we, I dropped the Plug and it is lost will replace as I plugged up with rubber tape and plastic tape and a bag.
We will be replacing hoses and the belt as a safety pracaution .
So when it is over the frost period for sure in aprile/may that will be my time to video a how to. and hoping others like me will learn /
had fun doing it and feals good
thanx guys

It's February already, Ground Hod saw his or her shadow, and 6 more weeks of winter left , now 4 1/2 about.

We're Super, or should I say I am super happy I forced my friend winterizing the boat.
Soon when the 0- degree weather blows out of here and when in the 40's We, or I should do some preperation to the boat that surrived.
When warm and wil check th boat I'll place a pic up, of what it looks like from the posts date thanx

You must be watching a different groundhog. The official groundhog(punxytawwny Phill) did not see his shadow. first time in about 9 years so according to him, Spring is right around the corner.

my bad ineeda caffeen fix, I said it backwards, or was I in a Warmer Climate, looking at a Burger

here is the pic of the boat and a video of an update to our conditions if care to watch. a lil antifreeze added, and some duct tape needed on the corners all fine **0-15 degrees feb 9 2007

Nice video. Why leave a boat that size in the water all winter?

thank you. why leave in the water ,that size?the amount of $$ saved for the winterizing by owner, to the shop / slip is at least a years savings.
for example: we know it costed us 2,000.00 plus for drydock/winterizing, and 100 per foot max for a full season from april-nov. or an annual fee.
we, or my friendChosen an Annual Fee, and 5 gallons of AF saving a year plus docking Fee.
The risk we have take would be Snow, freezing weather, and negleting to watch the boat?
.

How is it there now? The little harbor behind my house is all iced in, and Northport Bay has plenty of ice in it too. I'd say find cheaper storage if you can, and sleep at night all winter! Will their insurance pay if the ice tears the bellows and the boat sinks?
