I've got a 1978 22' Cobia with the 470 (4cyl) mercruiser I/O. This engine has the alternator built into the harmonic balancer. I think it's called a “stator". I don't think that is connected anymore because the boat now has an external alternator. When the engine is running the alt gauge reads that the battery is charging but also the needle is jumping around a bit. This whole system seems to be pretty old (yea, I carry towing ins.) and I'm not sure the charging system is working to its full capacity if it's working at all. Is there a way to determine if the battery is really getting a charge without me having to have an expert come look at it? Thanks in advance for any help.
