My Standard Horizon C1000 Chartplotter has begun to periodically lose the satellite fix. The duration of the outage varies but can last for an hour before returning. I checked all connections and they appear fine. The chartplotter is about 10 years old. Any suggestions on what I might do to address the problem, which appears to be getting worse, would be appreciated.

Three things come to mind. Software. Internal battery. Antenna.
I had the same problem with a smaller SH unit; a CP150C IIRC. SH traced it to two possibilities. First I was in need of a software (firmware?) upgrade. My unit ran on C-Map. They sent the cartridge with the updates (I was several behind) and I loaded it into the machine (I forget how, but it was pretty simple). The cartridge at the time was a refundable $70 charge.
That worked for a while. I can't count how many times I had to reload it because the internal battery was shot and the unit kept reverting to it's original software.
The second possibility SH said could be causing my problem came into play as well.
The antenna was toast. Just fair wear and tear. Heat, cold, bouncing around will take its toll. My unit was roughly as old as yours.

Call SH (their CS is tremendous) for the latest software release and tell them of your issues.
Unless things have changed, the worst you are out is some postage.
Between a new antenna, a new internal battery etc, I was close to the price of a new unit with an internal antenna.
I went with the CP190i mainly because the power hookups were the exact same. Something to consider.

If you have the original memory battery still in there after ten years, that would be the first thing to replace. They're only good for 4-5 years. After that, your device will start to behave abnormally. I change my Furuno chart plotter battery every 4 years. If you can figure out how to gain access to yours, that might be your problem. If it's not soldered on the circuit board, and it sits in a holder, you can slip the old one out and put the new one in. They're usually a 3 volt coin cell lithium battery about the diameter of a quarter.The most common one used is a CR2450 available in the Electronics area at Wal-Mart for about $3.50. Good Luck.
