Looking for a nice Marina in the Chesapeake Area,.
Ones we are interested in are:

BayBridge Marina
Chesapeake Harbor
Anchorage Marina
Balitmore Inner Harbor
any suggestions are thought on these???

Thanks, Ken & Mary Ellen

Is this for your home port or a visit? If your home port, where will you be coming from/driving from to get to your boat? The reason I ask is 1 of the marinas is across the Bay Bridge, two are in Baltimore and the other in Annapolis. How much driving do you want to do to reach the boat? How much traffic, etc. Give us some more info on your likes and dislikes; ie: kid friendly, pool, park like setting, boat yard, gas dock, parking close to boat, restaurants, etc.

Retired, looking to live aboard, and cruise alot... Like both, metroplotian and resort type settings..Have a Carver 396...Want cruising buddies and friendly folks...We live in Texas currently, buying the Carver in Maine. and permantly stay in the Chesapeake area and cruise alot. Driving is not an issue. Restaurants great, although I cook some mean BBQ Baby Back Ribs, and BBQ Chicken. Full service marina, laundry, hot tub, fuel, restaurants, but most of all just good ole friendly folks. Thanks,

Ken & Mary Ellen...

Have you checked Atlantic Marine Resort in Pasadena? They aren't very big, but they are centrally located to almost evertthing the mid-Bay has to offer. The satff is great, the marina is immaculate. The only problem you might have is that their channel is a bit shallow at low tide.

Ken: Our 2 cents.
Baybridge.. Good spot with a slower life style across the bridge ( Eastern Shore ) Boat show there in 2 wks that always throws a glitch into folks that stay there. Good choice.
Chesap. Harbor. Mostly folks keeping their boats there, and if you want to live aboard, alot of eyes to watch you, with the condos. around the entire marina. Restaurant there a little higher price. Much higher slip fee also.
Anchorage ( balt. ) Owned slips, and not very clean. Parking a real problem there, with only 3 days in the garage per slip and weekends worse. Alright place to visit, but wouldn't stay there. 40ft slip there sells for about 38K,but many are subletted.
Balt. Inner. New Inner Harb is OK but parking is charged seperatly and not cheap. Boat will be hard to keep clean up there. Once again nice to visit, btw Inner Harb, East Lots of construction, parking real problem!

Check Port Annapolis and Annapolis Landing. Port is a working marina, and ALM isn't,however both are a stone throw from Chesp. Harbor Marina, and more liveaboards to help and visit with. We just searched for a new one locally, and ended up at a yacht club due to most marinas being full for our size. We were at ALM for 15yrs prior to a "long story of a boat purchase" and we have kept our 43.
Lots of info from many folks here, so yell if you want to talk more about various choices.

You ,ight also want to look at Mears Point Marina and Piney Narrows Marina on the Kent Narrows about 5 miles from the bay Bridge Marina. They are on opposite sides of the narrows. They both allow live aboards and have good facilities. There are lots of goos restaurants within easy walking distance and good supermarkets within a mile. These marinas will be cheaper than Bay Bridge and Annapolis and Piney Narrows has some of the best prices on fuel in the area. Both have covered slips which cost a little more than an open slip but give the benefit of being much cooler in summer, and keep the snow and ice off in winter.

Dusty,

Which Yacht club are you at? We are going to make a trip up there to view the marinas, We were just trying to narrow it down to a few really nice ones..Are main goal is to network with folks and go for cruises, have a nice home base.

We are at Chesapeake Yacht Club on the West River. !!!They do not allow liveaboards!! Good group, however as I said we were caught in a situation of a boat purchase that put us there. Surprising Chesap. Harbor called today and said they had space for us?? and we will refuse, but some things might be opening up?? Call me when you are coming and we will try to set time to find the right place. dstyrhoadsrb2@gr5tyahoo.com since you have no anchor on boatered.com this might not work, however I'd suggest you join, with the largest advice to the boating world I have found. You can't PM someone without an anchor.

How about Herrington Harbour South, in Rose Haven MD near Chesapeake Beach. Great marina and they have a yacht club (Herring Bay Yacht Club).

Checked out Herrington Harbour, Looks Beautiful and quite impressive. Rates were very reasonable and the amenities were great.
Thanks for the Info.

HHS is a very nice place. We were there as transients a couple of times and enjoyed the place. Nice docks, pool, beach, bar & restaurant... what more could you want?

Trouble with HH(north and south) is you're in bumpkinville. There ain't much around there on land. They are nice facilities though. HHS being a bit more so. That and if you plan on hitting spots on the northern part of the Bay those marinas add more travel time on the water (aka $$$ in fuel). My advice is see what's around for your day-to-day needs. Like grocery shopping, restaurants (a variety is nice) and other shops. Since you're not living aboard now you may want to consider one of the marinas in Annapolis or Eastport. They're more expensive, that's true, but you're in walking distance to all sorts of restaurants and shops. More shopping and malls are a short drive. Port Annapolis and Annapolis Landing would be worth considering.

Bill,,I agree on the location. Marinas are nice, but things are movin that way. The Admiral and I almost bought a house down that way 12 yrs. ago, and when we asked the realator to show us the nearest grocery store, it was slightly larger than our 7-11..
A Safeway and a Walmart have both tried to enter the area, and it hasn't happened yet!

Herrington South is approx. 9 miles from Dunkirk, on route 4. Dunkirk has all the strip mall conveniences including a HUGE Safeway, restaurants etc. Prince Frederick is 18 miles away and has the Walmart and the shopping malls. I'm not surprised a transient wouldn't know about it, they wouldn't have a way to get there. As far as restaurants, there are many in both Chesapeake Beach and Deale which are both close by. In addition, if you like to play the slots, you can do that at the Rod and Reel in Chesapeake Beach which also has the small grocery store mentioned above; believe me when I tell you its bigger than a 7-11. And the kicker is, Herrington Harbour is bringing back the trolley which will take you between the two marinas, Deale and Chesapeake Beach for free. I have had my boat at Herrington South for the past 6 years, so I guess I'm sort of partial to the area, but the people are more friendly and accommodating than most of those found in Annapolis and you don't have to jump through hoops dodging all the boat traffic (including all the sail boats)to take your boat out on the bay. As far as centrally located, your about an hour and a half, two hours in your Carver from Annapolis, its pretty much a wash but if you want to go to Solomons Island or the Choptank River, you're closer. And, if you want a taste of the big city in Annapolis, you just run up there in your boat, pull into ego alley, and get a slip (under construction for a new bulkhead but should be done by the time you get here) at the city dock. You can walk right off your boat and be in the heart of Annapolis; none of the marinas around there are as close.

9 miles, 18 miles, uh huh. I've driven through that area more than once, not just on the water. So give me a bit more credit.

I can *walk* to over two dozen restaurants, pubs and shops from our marina in Eastport. I can drive less than 2 miles to 3 different supermarkets, 3 boating stores and darn near anything else. What's even better is guests don't have to drive all out of the way to get there.

Dodging traffic? It's less than a mile from most of the marinas to the open bay. Yes, HH is 'right on the bay' once you get out their channels. But then you're also at least an extra half-hour's worth of fuel south of a whole bunch of popular places ON the bay. Soloman's and points on the Choptank are indeed worth visiting but I'm not sure they're 'enough'. Yes, it's a nice place, and it does have great camraderie among fellow slip holders. But it's not without points to consider, especially if they're new to the area and new to being liveaboards (especially if they're thinking of wintering on it).

But let me make it clear, I like the HH setup, it's a great place and it would certainly be a mistake not to take a look into it before making any decisions.

Hell, I didn't think they even let power boaters in Eastport. Have you burned your socks yet?;-)
