Christmas money for the mail person

Okay...I live in N. Florida where it is not customary to tip the mailman or garbage workers. Aren't the postal workers USPS employees with great wages and benefits? Are not the garbage workers public employees with good wages and benefits? Sorry guys...it's not like these folks are your server at the local eatery. Call me Scrooge, but I don't get it...

$20 and $20 , for the last 15 years, ummm maybe I should bump 3% per year....
I believe we give $20, he seems to appreciate it.
Yes he gets paid to do his job, but there are various times we ask little favors, such as asking him to handle a vacation mail hold for us, whereas I imagine he could tell us to go to the PO and fill the form out, and not be bothered with that. Plus where else is my wife going to pick up the neighborhood rumors and gossip?
Ken, I guess I would say, it IS like they are our server at the local eatery. Now, in a newer neighborhood where they have those centralized boxes, maybe not, maybe you rarely see the guy. But this is the same guy, been coming to the door for 10 years or more. He does a good job. It's a nominal Christmas gift. That's it.

Not here. Postal is USPS. Sanitation is Waste Management.
Postal about $20 if that just to be sociable. Their job ain't all that easy. Primarily due to poor upper management.
Sanitation and recycle; $50 each.
Logic? The postal system very seldom brings me anything I want whereas the WM takes away EVERYTHING I don't want.
If I could get the postal guy and the WM guy to meet once a week, I could take the mail box off the house.
It may be A $5 limit, but if I gave my mailman less than $100 all the marina's mail would wind up in the basin. But this does entice him to deliver the mail even if, lets say, there is snow on the ground or its raining. I feel blessed.
Garbage men get $20 per man on the truck. Strangely there are an awful lot of guys hanging off the truck at christmas. I never remember 5 guys in August. The benefit is that they will take anything you leave, and I do mean anything. I forgot to tip one year, and by February I was getting calls from the Dept. of Sanitation saying they could not pick up this or that etc. I guess it is never too late for Christmas as I hooked them up at that time and never heard a problem from them again.
Its never an abligation to pay Christmas gratuities, but grease does make the wheels turn more smoothly.

I agree ... 20's for mailman and each sanitation engineer..... UPS guy got a 100 bucks though... this guy is awesome... Delivers evything, brings it around back ..... Great guy.... Sadly the recycle guys get hosed.... they run down the street with the emergency brake set so the driver can just jump out and the truck wil eventualy stop...... they threw the bins everywhere and the just sloppy as pigs... newspaper and cans all over the street on recycle days ( after ) they come ....

Whatever became of..... "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" ? I've never even seen my mailman smile. Never even get a thanks when I meet him at the curb & I say thank you for handing me the mail. I believe in tipping servers for good service as they earn less than minimum wage. TIPS = To Insure prompt service.
Bob, I agree with you. However, our mail lady is very friendly and goes out of her way to service us (returning if something needs to be signed for, etc.). I like to give her something but on the other hand, I don't give those that simply do their job and are probably making more money than I am!

FYI - The mail carriers do not make a great salary. Maybe in the midwest where the cost of living is cheap but around here in NY or other expensive areas it not a great living at all. Been there done that.

We usually give our mailman $20. We had a steady mailman for twelve years until he retired in May. We got a new steady mailman in August.
We don't give the garbage guys anything because it seems that its always different guys on the truck. We've never had a steady crew.
