clammers rescued

This morning's Newsday had a report of two clammers being rescued from a small island near Captree yesterday. What amazes me is that these two went clamming yesterday in a 14' boat, which sank because of wind and waves.
What part of 'small craft warnings' didn't they understand?

And they guy was crying that he lost his boat! Duh!
There was another rescue yesterday off Montauk, a 40' boat went down.

Always check the weather. Sheesh, I have a 40' and even a small wind keeps me at dock.
Not worth the uncomfortable ride!

It should have read two dummies rescued. They were LUCKY his mother was on the job. She pounded on doors made the calls and wouldn't let up until somebody went looking. I agree that a 14 foot boat was a bad choice on a good day but this time of year with the winds we have been having it was almost a deadly mistake.

I resent the media praising the one clammer for being able to use his cigarette lighter to start a signal fire. The lighter he kept in his pocket. His cell phone and wallet, which were supposedly in a ziplock bag to keep them dry, he left on the seat of the boat. I'd love to see the Coast Guard send them a bill for the cost of the rescue, a cost created by their own arrogance and stupidity. Hy
