I know it sounds silly, but I need some help on cleaning up my anchor.

Its a Danforth plow anchor. It has some rust like stains on it. I would imagine I could sand it down or grind it down and put some paint on it.

Can these be nickel plated? Anyone ever use a chrome spray paint on an anchor?

I wouldnt even in mind using galvanized paint on it. Just looking for suggestions on the best way to rehab the appearance of an old anchor.

Thanks in advance

Do you know anyone with a sand blasting cabinet. That would be the easiest way to get it cleaned up.
I don't know if I'd paint it. The rust will just bleed through and it might look even worse.

I've wire wheeled my Delta and sprayed with galvanizing spray. Turned out great, and shows very little wear in 2 years of sand bottom.

If you really want something special you could have it gold plated:)

If you sand it or grind it or wire brush it be sure to at least spray with aerosol galvanizing spray because abrading it will remove galvanizing and cause severe rust.

I have a 70# danforth, I had it powder coated three years ago. Still looks great. I think if I recall correctly it was around $100 to have it blasted and coated.

Powder coated what cover? I would love a chrome anchor but don't like the price tap that goes with it!

Had it done in white but I guess you could do it in any color you want. I considered a silver that looks like a brand new galvanized anchor. I took it to a local motorcycle shop that had big enough oven to do both of my anchors. We don't anchor very often, maybe 1/2 dz times a season but it has held up very well

You will find lots of discussion on the pros and cons of powder coating "things" here on BE.
I powder coat items in my Aerospace career. The biggest failure is delamination. The coating separates from the base metal and peels or just bubbles, sometimes with out any signs. The bond strength is based on the surface prep (sand blasted). The rougher the surface the better the outcome.
Powder coating is a generic term and there are many types and all can be done in different colors.
Powder coating on things that have moving parts - hinges is not recommended.
I am not sure what type of anchor you have. Might that have been a typo ? A plow anchor is a Delta Fast set or a CQR type.
The Danforth has the two flukes that swing down, The Fortress is a Danforth style.

TJM, yes my mistake it was a typo. Its a Delta Fast Set.

All very interesting information.

I have on problem cleaning it up prepping it and just spraying it with galvanized paint...
