Sorry for the repost. I couldn't find the old post that I had here.

I'm looking to add cleats to my dock for my 2001 245 sea Ray weekender. What size should I get?!

(Looking just for size. Already know how and where I'm going to mount.)

Depends on your lines. I used 1/2 " line on my Regal. I used 10" cleats with ample room to double up for storm conditions.
 
Yup, it don't hurt to go bigger than you'd expect as long as you have a good mounting area.

an FYI. Maybe you've noticed lag bolts going into wood at funny angles. There's actually a reason for that. Anything having to do with boats and water has constant movement, 24/7/365. a lag bolt going in at a 90^ can loosen and pull out easier than a bolt going in at and angle. Even if it starts to loosen when you're not there, a couple bolts going in at an angle in a cleat won't pull out. It might rip out with enuff force but it won't pull.

To Charlie's point - I'd only lag bolt a cleat if there's NO WAY to thru bolt it. Thru bolt with a backer plate or fender washers, etc - even if it means pulling that one board from the dock, securing the cleat, and reinstalling. I've seen clothes line used as mooring line (pontoon boat), that held during a storm, but the cleats pulled out and were hanging by the clothes line in the drink!

So while line & cleat size is important, if that cleat is secured by 3-inch wood screws or 10-penny nails . . ....
 
As I said in the original thread,,,,at our boat club, we build our own docks and we use angle brackets to through bolt the cleat to the stringer and through the decking as well.

Thanks for the help! I had trouble finding the original thread....

We did a similar idea to the brackets and through bolted the cleats. Came out good and hopefully will hold up for plenty of time to come!
